Welsh, Kania to vie for Junior-Junior title

  CHERRY HILL, N.J.—It will be medallist Patrick Welsh against Michael Kania on Wednesday morning for the 56th Junior-Junior Championship of the Golf Association of Philadelphia at Merchantville CC (par 36, 2,814 yards).

  The competition is for players aged 11 to 13.

  Welsh, of Huntingdon Valley CC, who took the nine-hole medal with on Monday with a 1-over-par 37, barely escaped two-extra-hole matches Tuesday to advance to Wednesday’s championship final.

  In the quarterfinals, he defeated Daniel Bernard of River Crest GC & Preserve in a 10-hole match in the morning, then came back to top Garrett Conway of Burlington CC in 11 holes in the semifinals.

  Michael Kania of Overbrook CG, another in a long line of the golfing Kanias, who barely qualified Monday with a 44, also had two close matches to make Wednesday’s final.

  In the quarterfinals, it took him three extra holes to defeat John Inman of Cherry Valley CC in 12 holes. In the semifinals, he beat Greg Verde of Spring Ford CC, 2&1.

  In the First Flight final on Wednesday, Devon Sweeney of Greate Bay GC, who defeated Erik Schlenker of Downingtown CC, 1-up, in the semifinals, will face Edward McCrossen of Whitemarsh Valley CC, who topped John Palmer of Chester Valley GC, 4&3, in the semifinals.

  In the Second Flight final Wednesday, Jim Johnston or Merion GC will face Mike Meehan of Moorestown FC.

  On Tuesday, Julian Dorey of Tavistock CC defeated A.J. Kania of Overbrook CG for the Third Flight title.

  Wednesday’s 18-hole final competition will begin at 7:30 a.m. with Welsh/Kania, followed by Sweeney/McCrossen at 7:37 a.m. and Johnston/Meehan at 7:45 a.m.
