Philadelphia CC's Brennan heads Jr. Boys' Championship Qualifier
EXTON, Pa. - Ted Brennan of Philadelphia CC bested 89 players on a brutally humid day to earn medalist honors in Monday’s Junior Boys’ Championship Qualifier at Whitford CC (par 72, 6,401 yards). The Newtown Square, Pa. resident carded a 1-over-par 73 to secure the No. 1 seed in the Championship Flight.
“It’s a good thing (to be seeded No. 1), but I don’t think it’s that important,” he said.

Brennan, 17, settled into an immediate rhythm by firing a birdie on No. 1 (par 4, 358 yards). Although his hybrid found the left fairway bunker, Brennan extricated himself with a 9-iron from 135 yards out and bumped in a five-footer.
“I started with a birdie, which is always nice,” he said. “I would describe today as solid. As the day went on, I felt more comfortable with my game.”
The Haverford School senior, however, ran into trouble on the monstrous par 5, 562-yard 4th hole. A wayward tee shot forced Brennan to punch out with a 7-iron. He missed the green with his third shot, chipped back on and three-putted to card a double bogey. On the par 3, 118-yard No. 5, Brennan reclaimed a stroke by knocking pitching wedge to two-feet and making the under-par chance. He drilled his 8-iron 145 yards and tapped-in for birdie on No. 6 (par 4, 378 yards). On No. 8 (par 4, 386 yards), Brennan hit an errant drive, punched out with a 4-iron, missed the green with his pitching wedge and two-putted for bogey. Despite that blemish, Brennan began his inward tour in red figures.
“I was feeling good and confident,” he said.
Brennan struggled on No. 11 (par 4, 336 yards). He sliced his drive into the right rough, returned to the fairway, knocked a wedge to 15-feet and failed to convert the par effort. But again, Brennan rallied on his next hole, the par 5, 500-yard No. 12. He launched his 3-wood 270 yards and chopped his pitching wedge just short of the green. Brennan then executed a 10-yard chip shot for birdie. He knocked his 9-iron into the No. 13 (par 3, 146 yards) bunker, but blasted out to four feet and saved par.
“At that point, I was just like, ‘keep it together,’” Brennan said.
His composure waned lightly on the par 4, 358-yard 14th hole. After his drive landed in the fairway, Brennan, feeling a rush of adrenalin, nuked his wedge from 100 yards out over the green, chipped back on and pushed his five-footer for par past the cup. Brennan thought he converted a 20-footer for birdie on No. 16 (par 5, 517 yards) after striking his 60-degree wedge 80 yards, but it barely grazed the top edge of the cup. He registered a bogey on his final hole, the par 4, 374-yard 18th hole. He escaped the fairway bunker by piercing his 9-iron 140 yards, but rolled a 20-footer for birdie five-feet past and missed the comebacker.
Nevertheless, Brennan feels confident in his golf game entering tomorrow’s Round of 16.
“I’ve been hitting the ball much better this year and making a lot of greens,” he said. “I’ve been struggling with the putter. Nerves are getting to me, but I’ve been working on that. I’m working on my pre-shot routine. Today, it just kind of came together. It’s a step in the right direction.”
Brennan will now face Mike McCullough of the Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour, who survived a six-for-one sudden-death playoff to snag the No. 16 seed. Match play for the Championship Flight begins at 8 a.m. The First Flight gets underway at 9 a.m.
Junior Team Championship
The team of Robert Firth, Jr., Jonathan Liu, Kyle Martin and T.J. Summers from Commonwealth National GC collectively carded a 235-total to win the Junior Team Championship. Martin registered a 4-over-par 76 to lead Commonwealth.
