Waynesborough CC's Eichenberg wins Francis B. Warner Cup (Net)
WAYNE, Pa. - Ernest Eichenberg, III of Waynesborough CC carded a net 4-under-par 66 to win the Francis B. Warner Cup (Net) Tuesday at St. Davids GC (par 70, 6,073 yards).
The victory marked a return to form for the Berwyn, Pa. resident, who previously played in gross version of the tournament. In 2004 at Whitemarsh Valley CC, he qualified as an alternate for the U.S. Senior Amateur. Since then, Eichenberg, now a 17 handicap, has suffered multiple injuries that significantly affected his golf game. He's gradually worked toward rebuilding his game, and Tuesday's result seemed to validate such efforts.
“It’s been a struggle for me. My handicap has gone up,” he said. “I’m very happy to have won this tournament.”
Eichenberg, 71, carded a gross birdie on No. 3 (par 4, 345 yards). After his drive cleared the trees, Eichenberg stuck his pitching wedge 120 yards and converted a short 3-footer. He also registered six net birdies and made crucial pars when necessary.
“I’m driving the ball pretty decent,” Eichenberg said. “I wasn’t in the long grass too much today. I was pretty safe.”
Charles Caparo of Plymouth CC carded a net 3-under-par 67 to place second. A steady short game guided his strong play Tuesday.
“I putted well. I’ve played here before, so the greens don’t give me any trouble,” he said.
Caparo, who began his round on the back nine, drilled his 7-iron 140 yards and converted an uphill, right-to-left breaking 20-footer for a gross birdie on the uphill par 5, 492-yard 16th hole. Two holes later, he ran into trouble on the dogleg-right No. 18 (par 4, 366 yards). He attempted to hit a punch 7-iron under a tree, but it clipped the branches and dropped into the rough. Caparo, an 11-handicap, then knocked his pitching wedge 110 yards into the greenside bunker and went on to card a double bogey.
Caparo, 62, surged on his final nine holes. He carded two net birdies on Nos. 5 (par 4, 381 yards) and 7 (par 4, 411 yards), respectively. Furthermore, Caparo’s 7-iron returned to his good graces on the strenuous par 5 No. 8 (466 yards). Standing in thick rough 140 yards from the flagstick, he reached the green and executed a downhill 30-footer for a gross birdie. To close out his round, Caparo laced a 3-wood to 10-feet left of the No. 9 (par 3, 204 yards) flagstick and carded another gross birdie.
“It was one of those days where I felt comfortable with the guys I was playing with, and I just felt comfortable swinging,” he said.
This marks Caparo’s second appearance in the Warner Cup (Net). He competed in the Warner Cup (Gross) last year and finished in the middle of the pack. His golf game remained steady until he broke his foot last fall. Caparo’s handicap index soon escalated as he worked to recover from the injury, rendering him eligible for Tuesday’s net tournament.
“Finally, my game is starting to come together,” Caparo said. “This is probably the healthiest I’ve been for a number of years. It’s been a struggle. That back nine today was the best I’ve hit the ball all year long.”

Open to senior male golfers 55 years of age and over, the Warner Cup (Net) is an 18-hole individual net stroke-play event for players with a 7.1 or higher handicap index. Four overall low net prizes are awarded with net prizes in each of three handicap classes determined by course handicap.
Francis B. Warner of Philadelphia Cricket Club served as secretary-treasurer for the Golf Association of Philadelphia for 18 years. The Francis B. Warner Cup (Net), now in its fifth year, is an ongoing tribute to his memory.
