Billings team takes Father & Son (Older) in playoff at Whitford
EXTON, Pa. — Robert P. Billings and his son Robert A. defeated Jon and Matthew Finger in a sudden-death playoff to capture the Father & Son (Older) at Whitford Country Club (par 72, 6,362 yards). The team executed a challenging two-putt for par on No. 3 (par 4, 390 yards), the third playoff hole, to prevail.
“I’ve been playing in GAP events for the last 15 years, and it’s always exciting,” the elder Billings, 62, of Newtown Square, Pa., said. “It’s my first GAP win, and I’m really proud to win it with my son. It’s truly exciting.”
“It’s special for me,” the younger Billings, 42, of Cherry Hill, N.J., said. “I thought my competitive golf days were over until we came out today and frankly got lucky. We started out shaky and gathered on the back nine. It’s nice to spend the day with my dad. We’re going to have a nice dinner with some friends and celebrate.”
Personal and professional obligations typically keep Billings, of Stone Harbor Golf Club, out of the tournament scene. Hard to tell, judging by his playoff performance.
In the sudden-death session, both teams halved the first hole (par 4, 358 yards) with pars; Billings executed a clutch seven-footer to extend it. Jon Finger, 62, and the elder Billings hit wedges out of the rough from 118 and 112 yards, respectively. Finger’s approach darted to the back of the green; Billings’ above the flagstick, 15 feet in front of their opponent. Matthew Finger, of Woolwich Township, N.J., sent a downhill chip 10 feet by the jar. The younger Billings left his birdie try eight feet above it. Jon Finger missed his uphill par putt, giving Billings, of Rolling Green Golf Club, a window for a win.
“Like all good dads, they come through in the end and pick their son up,” the younger Billings said.
“I was lucky enough to see the line,” his father added.
In regulation, the Billings and Finger teams carded 5-over-par 77s. The Billings posted two red figures on the day. Starting on the back nine, the elder Billings hit an 8-iron 130 yards to 15 feet for birdie on No. 15 (par 4, 394 yards). After making the turn at 5 over, the Billings settled a bit and carded a birdie against two bogeys coming in. The younger Billings hit a lob wedge 100 yards to seven feet for a 3 on the par 4, 390-yard No. 3. His father missed a two-footer for par on No. 8 (par 4, 386 yards), which put the team into a tie with the Finger squad.
“I was nervous,” the elder Billings said. “I knew we were in it and the pressure amps up.”
The Billings team knew that Jon and Matthew Finger posted a 77 in the morning — a number that held strong amid tough scoring conditions. The Finger team birdied its first hole (par 4, 358 yards) in regulation, where Matthew hit a wedge 100 yards into tap-in territory. A potent mixture of missed greens and three-putts led to six bogeys on the team’s inward tour.
“The greens were difficult here,” Matthew, 35 said.
Jon, of Charleston, S.C., traveled to the area to both visit family and to fulfill business obligations. He and Matthew decided to make time for the Father & Son (Older).
Super-Senior
Llanerch Country Club’s Kevin and Neil McDermott filed a 3-over-par 75 to take the Super-Senior Division (par 72, 5,933 yards).
“It’s always a great honor to win a GAP event,” Neil McDermott, a past president of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, said. “This was my first Super-Senior event, and to win it with my son Kevin is a great thrill.”
The McDermott team — father Neil, 65, of Newtown Square, Pa. and son Kevin, 35, of Conshohocken, Pa. — used a pair of par 5 birdies as insurance to counter mistakes. It carded red figures on Nos. 12 (444 yards and 16 (505 yards).
NOTES
John Clough of Philadelphia Cricket Club aced the par 3, 115-yard No. 5 with a sand wedge. It marked the Berwyn, Pa. resident’s seventh career hole-in-one — his last coming in 2005.
Now in its 101st year, the Father & Son (Older) is open to father and son teams with sons 30 years of age and older.
Founded in 1897, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) is the oldest regional golf association in the United States and serves as the principal ruling body of amateur golf in its region. Its 145 Member Clubs and 57,000 individual members are spread across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. As Philadelphia’s Most Trusted Source of Golf Information, the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s mission is to promote, preserve and protect the game of golf.
