Philadelphia CC’s Walsh plucks Marston Cup in playoff

MALVERN, Pa. — Philadelphia Country Club’s P. Chet Walsh emerged from The Marston Cup aftermath victorious Wednesday at White Manor Country Club (par 71, 6,599 yards). The Wayne, Pa. resident outlasted Ron Weaver of Bent Creek Country Club and Steve Lubin of Five Ponds Golf Club, the tournament’s defending champion, in a sudden-death playoff. All three players posted even-par 71s in regulation.

“It’s an event that I’ve always felt I could win, just because of the age group and I was at the young end,” an emotional Walsh, 47, said. “I haven’t played well the last few years. Currently, I have a lot more confidence in my game. Today, I drove it really poorly but I was able to get it around.”

The affable Walsh capped off a strong season with a piece of Golf Association of Philadelphia hardware. He qualified for match play in the Amateur Championship, posted a Top 10 finish in a shortened Patterson Cup and competed in the Open Championship at Pine Valley Golf Club. Walsh also placed tied for fourth in the Silver Cross Award Standings.

“My putting has been very hot and cold,” Walsh, the 2008 Tournament of Champions victor, said. “I figured something out during the second qualifying round of the Amateur. It’s an ugly stroke, but it converts the majority of the short putts. I didn’t three-putt all day.”

In the sudden-death session, Lubin bowed out after the first hole (par 4,421 yards). He flew the green with his approach and watched his two-footer for par loop around the jar. Both Walsh and Weaver essentially halved it with pars, forcing more overtime. On the second playoff hole (No. 9,par 4, 408 yards), Weaver caught the left fairway bunker with his drive and only advanced his extrication 30 yards. He didn’t reach the green on his third stroke, and a routine two-putt par was all Walsh needed to seal victory.

“It’s another GAP win, but it’s not a Major,” the longtime GAP veteran said. “It’s still nice to win a GAP event, no doubt about that. I’ve always wanted something bigger.”

In regulation, Walsh carded three birdies against three bogeys. He went bunker-to-bunker for bogey on No. 2 (par 4, 398 yards), sending a 6-iron out of the fairway pit into the short left greenside sand. Walsh fired back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 (par 4, 404 yards) and 5 (par 4, 424 yards). He hit an uphill 8-iron 152 yards to four feet on the first, a 7-iron 166 yards to 15 feet on the latter. Walsh bogeyed the par 4, 408-yard No. 9 following a wayward drive that crashed into a tree and plummeted into the fescue. Another poor tee shot — a 3-wood on the 13th hole (par 4,438 yards) — left Walsh with a difficult lie. He chopped a hybrid 80 yards and ingested a bogey. He forged a tie with Weaver, who finished in the morning, after a birdie on No. 17 (par 5, 520 yards).Walsh powered a 4-hybrid from 225 yards out of the first cut and left a seven-footer for eagle on the low side.

Lubin experienced a similar round. He assembled seven straight pars before constructing a birdie on No.8 (par 3, 125 yards), where he stopped a pitching wedge at three feet. He relinquished the stroke on the following hole (par 4, 408 yards) following a three-putt from below a sloping green. A second three-putt — this time on the par 5, 515-yard 11th hole — also resulted in a bogey. Lubin ran a quick downhill 12-footer for birdie four feet past the jar and missed the comebacker. He stuck a 7-iron 163 yards to 20 feet for birdie on No. 16 (par 4, 416 yards) to return to even.

“I’m proud of the way I defended my title,” Lubin, 41, of Doylestown, Pa., said. “To get this far and get it to a playoff is cool stuff. It’s something I’ve never done before.”

Weaver’s 17th hole was a bit more dramatic than Walsh’s. He deposited an 80-yard wedge shot for eagle to move to 1 under in regulation.

“That was very special,” Weaver, 53, of Lancaster, Pa., said. “I had the perfect number and just juiced it in the hole. It hit about four feet right and spun in. I don’t make many eagles because I don’t hit it very far. That was a lot of fun.”

Weaver bogeyed his last hole (par 4, 369 yards) to drop back to even. He attempted to punch a 5-iron out of a gnarly lie, only advancing his golf ball slightly. Weaver reached the putting surface on his third stroke and lipped a 15-footer to save par.

“The rough here is brutal,” he said. “Being a little weak, it’s hard for me to advance it. I have to work on that.”

Attribute Weaver’s physical strength to the left shoulder replacement he underwent two years ago.

“I’m limited to how much I can play and practice,” Weaver said. “That’s why whenever the ball is in the rough, I really struggle. I’ve lost probably 30 to 40 yards off the tee. I’m at a point now where I’m going to be getting stronger for the first time. Now I’m on a strong regiment of physical therapy, strengthening, conditioning and getting back to where I can hit it again. It’s really hard to play the game when you can’t hit it past 240 yards.”

What Weaver lacks in distance he made up for in execution around the greens. On No. 3 (par 3, 238 yards), Weaver landed a 4-wood short of the green, chipped up and missed a six-footer to save par. He birdied the par 5, 543-yard No. 6 after stopping a wedge at eight feet. Weaver’s outward tour ended on a sour note. He couldn’t elevate his third shot — a 58-degree sand wedge from 20 yards — over a towering slope on the No. 9 (par 4, 408 yards) green. Weaver then three-putted for a 6. He regained his footing with a birdie on No. 10 (par 4, 391 yards), drilling a 9-iron 130 yards to four feet.

On the difficult par 4, 438-yard 13th hole, Weaver pulverized a 4-iron 210 yards into an uphill lie just off the green. He muscled a chip onto the putting surface and missed a 15-footer to save par. Weaver etched a 3 on the par 4, 416-yard 16th hole, bunting an uphill 4-utlity 179 yards to a foot off the green and burying a 20-footer.

NOTES — Play was suspended for 50 minutes due to lightning.

The Marston Cup honors Max Marston. For four months in the summer of 1923, Marston was America’s best amateur golfer. Between mid-May and mid-September, Marston was virtually unstoppable through a series of club, state, national and international events.

It began with the Walker Cup Matches, where Marston won two matches as the Americans successfully retained the Cup. Marston returned home to capture the Patterson Cup and Amateur Championship in successive weeks and, in doing so, earned the Silver Cross Award. In July, he took the Pennsylvania Amateur title and finished as low amateur in the Golf Association of Philadelphia Open.   In September, Marston traveled to Floosmoor Country Club outside Chicago, Ill. for the U.S. Amateur. He rallied in the second round to defeat tournament favorite Bob Jones, 2&1, before knocking off Francis Ouimet in the semifinals. He stopped defending champion Jess Sweetser in the final on the 38th hole. In that four month span, he also captured the Merion Cricket Club championship and Pine Valley Golf Club’s Crump Cup.

The tournament is limited to players 40 to 54 years of age with a 10.0 handicap index or lower.

Founded in 1897, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) is the oldest regional golf association in the United States and serves as the principal ruling body of amateur golf in its region. Its 145 Member Clubs and 57,000 individual members are spread across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. As Philadelphia’s Most Trusted Source of Golf Information, the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s mission is to promote, preserve and protect the game of golf.
