LANCASTER, Pa. — Robert and Rob Billings successfully defended their Father & Son (Older) title at Lancaster Country Club (par 70, 6,327 yards) Monday. The duo carded a 2-over-par 72 to take the tournament’s 102nd edition amid pleasant temperatures. The Billings team prevailed in a sudden-death playoff that lasted three holes a year ago at Whitford Country Club.
“It’s always nice to put up a good fight,” Rob, 43, of Cherry Hill, N.J., said. “The GAP does such a good job with the Father and Son event; each year, we’ve marked it on our calendars. We make it a father and son thing instead of a golf tournament. If we came in 10th place, I would’ve had just as good a time. It’s nice to defend.”
“I’ve been playing well,” Robert, 63, of Newtown Square, Pa., said. “My son has a young family now, so he doesn’t get to play that often, but he still strikes the ball solidly. I was kind of hoping that we could put up a good showing.”
Monday’s round marked Rob’s seventh of the year (“I think this is my 57th,” Robert said.). He didn’t show any signs of rust as the Billings team tackled the William Flynn design. They created multiple birdie opportunities between 10 and 12 feet throughout their outward tour, but failed to capitalize. The team carded a bogey on No. 7 (par 5, 496 yards) after Rob, a Philadelphia Publinks GA member, sent a 5-wood from 230 yards into the water hazard.
“It was our one bad decision in hindsight,” Rob said. “I don’t play enough to stripe 5-woods to greens with 225-yard carries.”
The Billings team returned to championship form with a birdie on No. 12 (par 3, 166 yards), where Robert stopped a 7-iron at 18 feet. They remained at even par until the par 4, 347-yard 16th hole. Robert’s 9-iron from 120 yards clipped a tree.
“I pulled it about 10 feet from my line,” the Rolling Green Golf Club member said.
“We took our medicine there instead of getting greedy, thinking we could make another 3 coming in,” Rob added.
King and Tyler Knox of the host club posted a 3-over-par 73 in the morning. Aware of that number, the Billings team did what it needed to triumph on No. 18 (par 4, 435 yards). Robert sent a hybrid from 190 yards up the fairway. Rob’s low chip stopped 20 feet below the flagstick, and his father rolled the team’s par putt into tap-in territory.
Northampton Valley Country Club’s John Convery and his son John of the Golf Course at Glen Mills carded a 3-over-par 73 to win the Super-Senior Division.
The Father & Son (Older) is open to father and son teams with sons 30 years of age and older.
Founded in 1897, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) is the oldest regional golf association in the United States and serves as the principal ruling body of amateur golf in its region. Its 143 Member Clubs and 57,000 individual members are spread across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. As Philadelphia’s Most Trusted Source of Golf Information, the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s mission is to promote, preserve and protect the game of golf.
