Home sweet home: Glenmaura’s Mitchells win Father & Son (Older)

MOOSIC, Pa. — Three golf tournaments for Patrick and Kevin Mitchell, Sr. as a team in 2014, three victories. The Glenmaura National Golf Club duo fired a 1-over-par 72 to win the 103rd Father & Son (Older) on its home course (par 71, 6,321 yards) Monday. The Mitchells paired up to capture the Pocono Farms Member Guest and Jack Frost Blue Ridge Invitational earlier this season.

â€śWe’ve played a lot of golf together, so it’s easy for us to play a lot of different formats,” Patrick, 34, said. “Alternate shot is obviously very difficult, but he swung really well today, and I was there when he needed me. We both played pretty solid.”

â€śOur goal was to try not to leave par putts more than two or three feet,” Kevin, 59, added. “If the birdie putts went in, great. If they didn’t, don’t leave anybody a knee-knocker, which we didn’t.”

The Mitchells entered Monday’s affair at different points, physically speaking. Kevin continues to rehabilitate a left shoulder injury that he suffered last winter. He didn’t return to the golf course until June. Patrick is fresh off a runner-up finish in Glenmaura National’s club championship over the weekend.

â€śIt was a pretty good warm up for this,” Patrick, a golf coach in the Pocono Mountain School District, said.

  Was it ever.

A warmth and affection for their home digs increased the Mitchells’ chances for a third straight title. The Scranton, Pa. residents turned in 1 under thanks to back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6 (par 5, 514 yards) and 7 (par 3, 171 yards). On the first, Kevin powered a rescue from 215 yards onto the front fringe, and his son lagged the eagle attempt into tap-in territory. Patrick then stopped a 7-iron at four feet on the latter. Poor drives on No. 3 (par 4, 405 yards) produced the team’s lone front blemish.

To start its inward tour, the Mitchells missed a pair of makeable birdie putts, which fully stung on No. 12 (par 4, 380 yards). Kevin skulled a wedge from 70 yards to some 70 feet above the hole location. A three-putt brought the Mitchells back to even. But the seven-year Glenmaura members responded with a birdie on the par 4, 385-yard 13th hole, where Patrick hit an 8-iron 170 yards to two feet. Back-to-back bogeys prevented a subpar score. On No. 15 (par 3, 206 yards), the Mitchells chose the lesser of two evils — Kevin’s 3-rescue from the front left bunker instead of Patrick’s 5-iron from the hardwoods just right of the cart path. Patrick splashed out to 30 feet, but his dad couldn’t convert the lengthy par putt. Kevin thought he played a wedge from 112 yards on No. 16 (par 4, 409 yards) perfectly to a front middle hole location.

â€śI hit it right where I was supposed to, and the first kick should have went left onto to the green and rolled up to the hole,” Kevin, a retired police officer, said. “The first kick went straight into the heavy grass, and Patrick had an against-the-grain chip that he really wasn’t comfortable with.”

â€śThe holes got meatier and meatier as the course went on,” Patrick, a high school teacher, added. “Course knowledge was definitely a big factor today.”

The team of Robert and Rob Billings, the event’s two-time reigning champions, didn’t compete.

Phil & Phil Over

Phil Over of Golden Oaks Golf Club swept in a straightway five-footer for birdie on No. 10 (par 5, 477 yards), the first playoff hole, to assure he and son Phil, who plays out of Penn Oaks Golf Club, a victory in the tournament’s Super-Senior Division (5,967 yards). The Overs defeated Jay Deakins of St. Davids Golf Club and his father Warren of Philadelphia Country Club in a sudden-death playoff. Both teams finished regulation at 4-over-par 75.

â€śThis is a fantastic golf course, so I was excited about that and I was excited to play with dad,” Over, 48, of Malvern, Pa., said. “He putted great. That was the story of the day.”

â€śIt feels delightful. It’s great to win,” Over, 76, of Elverson, Pa., added.

On the first playoff hole, the younger Over knocked a wedge 97 yards to five feet below the flagstick. The Deakins team saw its birdie chance from 20 feet above slip three feet by the cup.

The Father & Son (Older) is open to father and son teams with sons 30 years of age and older.
