Semenetz squad snags Father & Son (Middle) at Talamore
AMBLER, Pa. — Gregg Semenetz pulled into Talamore Country Club’s parking lot at 8:20 a.m. Thursday. The Jeffersonville, N.Y. resident endured heavy traffic during his three and half hour drive to the par 71, 6,109-yard layout — all for a chance to play a round of golf alongside his son Sean.

The younger Semenetz scooped Gregg up in the parking lot, stopped at the driving range for a quick session and scurried to meet an 8:30 a.m. tee time in the Father & Son (Middle). Their ensuing experience made Gregg’s commute even more worthwhile. The Semenetz team carded a 1-under-par 70 to top the 68-team field.
Huntingdon Valley Country Club’s Jack and John Quirk, co-champions in the Father & Son (Younger) a year ago, finished second at 72. The event’s format is selective drive/alternate shot.
“I don’t mind driving. Anytime I get a chance to play with my kids, I’ll call in sick [from work],” Gregg, 58, said. “I got to the range and hit about five balls. My swing was suspect, but my putting was great today. And he just crushes the ball. As we’re getting older, we don’t spend as much time together. It was a great tournament today.”
“It was fun,” Sean, 28, of Philadelphia, Pa., added. “He taught me the game. I don’t get many lessons, so it’s all come from him.”
Gregg and Sean play approximately five rounds of golf together annually.
“We had this one circled for awhile,” Sean, a Philadelphia Cricket Club member, said. “We had a good time. It’s a grind. You can’t hide in this format.”
The Semenetz team didn’t hide from the leaderboard; it carded three birdies against two bogeys on the day.
“For this format, I think we played well,” Gregg, who works in real estate, said. “It worked better when I hit a good drive and he hit the second shot in. We kept both of us having bad tee shots out of the mix.”
One of those good drives occurred on the par 4, 415-yard 15th hole. It left Sean with an 8-iron from 150 yards, which he knocked to 20 feet. Gregg reported for red clean-up duty. The Semenetz team, which started on the back nine, also fired back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3 (par 4, 325 yards) and 4 (par 3, 140 yards). After Sean nearly drove the green on the reachable par 4, Gregg stopped a seamless pitch at two feet. Sean drained a left-to-right breaking 20-footer on No. 4 following his father’s 8-iron shot to the green’s center.
Heavy wedges courtesy of Gregg (“I couldn’t get the feel down for those yardages”) led to bogeys on Nos. 11 (par 4, 363 yards) and 1 (par 4, 400 yards). He also relents missed scoring opportunities on Talamore’s par 5s (Nos. 13, 534 yards and 18, 488 yards), though both didn’t ultimately prove costly.
“He left me with a 7-iron and a 6-iron, and we parred both of them,” Gregg, a member of Sea Trail Golf Resort & Golf Links, said.
The Semenetz family has a home in North Carolina. Trips during Easter and Thanksgiving holidays often found the collective on a course.
“Our vacations were always golf vacations. His brother and sister both play, and my wife plays,” Gregg said. “That was our recreation. Sean was probably four years old when he started playing.”
Gregg is currently scheduled to be in North Carolina on the day of Philadelphia Cricket’s father and son tournament. He may change those plans for another chance to join Sean.
“I’m contemplating flying up for the day. I’ve been checking flights,” Gregg said.
NOTES
Play was delayed an hour and 15 minutes due to lightning in the area ... The Father & Son (Middle) tournament is for those father and son teams with sons 18 to 29 years old. The event was conceived in 2008 because of the high demand for participation in both the Father & Son (Younger), which celebrates its 58th anniversary this year, and the Older tournament — an event in its 104th year.
