Manufacturers’ Mullers generate victory in 104th Father & Son (Older)
HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. — An ace, an albatross and a tournament victory. All attained in 11 days by Maximillian Muller.

The Manufacturers Golf & Country Club member joined his father James to add the last one to the list Wednesday. The two carded a 1-over-par 71 to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 104th Father & Son (Older) at Huntingdon Valley Country Club (par 70, 6,379 yards).
Jim Weber of Waynesboro Country Club and his son John of Conestoga Country Club also filed a 71, but were unable to return for a playoff to determine a champion.
The event’s format is selective drive/alternate shot.
“Two Saturdays ago, I had an ace on No. 4 [at Manufacturers] with a 9-iron. Then last weekend, we had a Member-Member tournament, and I holed an 8-iron for a 2 on our 9th hole,” Maximillian, 30, of Fort Washington, Pa., said. “It was wild. I’ve been playing well.”
His hot streak continued on Huntingdon Valley’s demanding terrain. The Muller team, which started on the back nine, scraped together a 3 over before sinking into the sizzle. Maximillian dropped a wedge 74 yards to three feet for a 3 on No. 1 (par 4, 363 yards). He again played the set-up role on the par 4, 343-yard No. 4, knocking a 54-degree wedge 119 yards to 25 feet. James converted a slider that shifted two feet to the left upon descent. Following a bombastic drive by Maximillian on No. 7 (par 5, 538 yards), James launched a 5-iron 192 yards to the green’s backside. Maximillian eased a downhill chip to 10 feet, and dad cleaned up the birdie putt.
The strenuous par 4, 415-yard No. 9 — a hilly shape-shifter that presents little margin for error — nearly kept the Muller team off the title table. Maximillian found the fairway with a towering drive, but James, with an awkward lie on the downslope, bladed a wedge from 119 yards into the hillside beneath the green. The result, though it didn’t seem so at the time, proved fortunate.
“Thank goodness it hit the hill because I would’ve had to take a penalty out of the halfway house,” James, 62, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., said. “The boys (Maximillian and Alexander) and I used to sled on that hill, and I would have to stand at the bottom to make sure they didn’t go in the creek. It’s a better sledding hill than it is a chipping hill.” Maximillian chipped onto the green and James missed a 10-footer for par.
The Muller team captured the Father & Son tournament (ages 15-17) in 2002 at Lu Lu Country Club — 30 years after James and his father Alfons won in 1972 at Llanerch Country Club. Since the 2002 victory, Maximillian’s gained distance off the tee and improved his composure on the course.
“He cranks it, and for as long as he hits it, he can still putt,” James said. “It’s very cool and very rewarding [to win today].”
Not much has changed when it comes to dad’s golf game.
“He’s just pretty steady,” Maximillian said.

Super-Senior Division
Penn Oaks Golf Club’s Pete and Philip Petroll share three decades worth of Father & Son tournament memories. The two forged one that will forever sit atop the bundle. The Petroll team carded a 1-under-par 69 take the tournament’s Super-Senior (par 70, 5,819 yards) title.
“It’s 30 years in the making,” Philip, 44, of West Chester, Pa., said. “We’ve been in [the GAP Father & Son tournament] since I was 12 probably. It’s special. [Dad] hit it 200 yards down the middle, and I could hit the ball where I needed to. It’s a little easier when he keeps it in play like that.”
“One of us was usually in a decent position,” Pete, 80, of Chadds Ford, Pa., said. “He hit all of the good shots.”
Starting on the back nine, the Petroll team posted a modest 35 heading out. Victory prospects multiplied following a wild par save on No. 4 (par 4, 328 yards). After Pete departed the right greenside bunker, Philip drained a 50-footer.
“That’s when I thought we’d have a chance [at winning],” Philip said.
A pair of birdies coming in enhanced those chances. On the par 3, 127-yard No. 5, Philip stopped a wedge at two feet. He knocked a 52-degree wedge 100 yards to five feet on No 7 (par 5, 518 yards). Dad cleaned up the birdie putt.
The Father & Son (Older) tournament is for those father and son teams with sons 30 years of age and older.
