Llanerch CC’s McDermott takes the Silver Cross

Michael McDermott of Llanerch CC added another prize to his already expansive trophy case on Thursday by capturing the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s prestigious Silver Cross.

McDermott distanced himself from the field finishing with a four-round total of 282, 2-under-par.

The Silver Cross is awarded to the player with the lowest aggregate score in the Joseph H. Patterson Memorial Cup and the qualifying rounds of the Amateur Championship.

The 28-year-old resident of Havertown, Pa., assured himself of his first Silver Cross with rounds of 75 and 70 in the Patterson Cup. He played his first round on Thursday at Bellewood GC (par 71, 6,685 yards) before finishing his afternoon 18 holes at Spring Ford CC (par 72, 6,768 yards).

"While it’s different than winning a true tournament, it certainly is a great test of golf," said McDermott. "With all the good players you have to play against, you have to play four good rounds to win it. After the Amateur I knew I was in good position, I just had to have two good rounds today."

McDermott carded a 4-under-par 137 in the Amateur qualifying rounds at Philmont CC (North) and Manufacturers G&CC in mid-June. A sluggish start at Bellewood GC in his morning round watched Anthony Apostolico of Deerfield G&TC, who trailed by three shots heading into today, close the gap to one stroke.

But McDermott carded a 2-under-par 34 on his front nine at Spring Ford (he started on the back side) and finished with his final nine in an even 36.

"There’s history in every tournament in GAP," said McDermott. "I have my name on a few of the trophies, hopefully I can cross that one off my list."

For the second consecutive year Michael Tash of Tavistock CC placed second.

He finished his four rounds with a 289 total.
