The matches pit two 12-man teams, including one junior and two seniors, from each association in a four-ball match (held on Saturday) and an individual match (held on Sunday). Each match is worth one point. A possible 18 points are available. In the case of a tie (9-9), the defending association retains the trophy.
Representing the Golf Association of Philadelphia are Scott Ehrlich of Meadowlands CC, Brian Gillespie of St. Davids GC, Roc Irey of Cedarbrook CC, James Kania, Jr. of Overbrook GC (junior representative), Lynn Kilduff of Huntsville GC, Charles McClaskey of Wyncote GC (senior representative), Michael McDermott of Llanerch CC, Oscar Mestre, Jr. of Overbrook GC, Terry Sawyer of Yardley CC (senior representative), Glenn Smeraglio of Yardley CC and P. Chet Walsh of Philadelphia CC. Chris Lange of Overbrook GC is the captain.
Ehrlich, Kilduff and Kania, Jr. are Mason-Dixon rookies.
Lange is the veteran of the group with 15 prior appearances.
"It’s an honor to get picked because it means you played well all year," said Lange, 50, of Bryn Mawr, Pa. "It’s a great experience because you usually play a very good golf course, it is a competitive and fun environment, and you get to meet your counterparts in the Washington [D.C.]-Virginia area."
Smeraglio is making his fourth Mason-Dixon Matches appearance.
"[Being selected] is a reward for all the hard work [you put into a season]," said Smeraglio, 44, of Newtown, Pa. "You always want to be selected and now [with the Player of the Year standings] you know exactly what it takes. You certainly want to earn as many Player of the Year points as possible and when [that] all adds up, this is a nice by-product of a decent season."
Last year, the Golf Association of Philadelphia captured the matches for the second consecutive year with a 9½ to 8½ point victory at Galloway National GC in Galloway, N.J. The Golf Association of Philadelphia was the host.
Next year, the Mason-Dixon Matches will be hosted by the Golf Association of Philadelphia again and are set for Metedeconk National GC in Jackson, N.J.
