O’Hair heads U.S Open Local Qualifier at Talamore

AMBLER, Pa.- Sean O’Hair, a touring pro from Concord CC in Concordville, Pa., carded a 4-under-par 67 to take the top spot in a local qualifier for the U.S. Open Championship on Friday at Talamore at Oak Terrace CC (par 71, 6,626 yards) and advance into sectional qualifying.

This local qualifier (field of 69 players at Talamore) was one of approximately 100, 18-hole local qualifiers for the U.S Open Championship that will be played June 17-20 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

Also advancing into sectional qualifying were Christiana CC head pro Dave McNabb (69), college student Tyler Randol (70) and Nationwide Tour regular Joe Daley (71), who survived a three-man playoff with a par on the fifth extra hole, took the final qualifying spot. Sectionals are set for June 7-8 at 13 nationwide sites. Approximately 90 total spots will be awarded to fill the championship field of 156 players.

The disappointment from sectional qualifying a season ago is still fresh in O’Hair’s mind. Last year, in St. Augustine, Fla., O’Hair missed making the U.S. Open field by three shots after carding double bogeys on the 15^th and 17^th holes.

This year he’ll try his hand at Canoe Brook CC in Summit, N.J., on June 7.

"I think this year the difference might be the experience," said O’Hair, 21, a resident of Aston. "Physically, I feel like I’m there. What I’ve got to do is learn not to panic [like I did last year] and deal with the emotions better. I’ve got to learn to deal with those inner demons."

O’Hair opened with a 31 on the front nine, recording birdies on his final four holes.

He finished with an even-par 36 on the back.

"Out here the tee ball is critical, and hit that well all day," said O’Hair, who missed just two fairways on the day. "You have to give yourself opportunities to make birdies, and that’s what I did."

O’Hair’s tournament schedule currently includes Monday qualifiers for the Nationwide Tour. He made the field for the Nationwide stop in Hot Springs, Ark., and finished 28, but failed to get out of qualifying on his only other try.

This will be his third opportunity at sectional qualifying.

McNabb of Newark, Del., has been at Christiana CC for the last 13 years, the last eight as the head pro.

This will be his third chance at sectionals.

"I figured 1 or 2 under would be pretty good," said McNabb, 37. "In these [events] you just want to hang around and hang around and see what happens."

McNabb finished 14^th in the Philadelphia Section of the PGA Player of the Year standings.

He’ll head to Woodmont CC in Rockville, Md., for sectionals.

Randol, 20, of Lawrence, N.Y., will travel to Summit, N.J. for sectionals.

The University of Richmond junior will be looking to make his first U.S. Open field.

Randol, who made six birdies and three bogeys, points to his birdie on the 16^th hole (par 4, 377 yards) as the difference. After his drive landed on the left edge of the hazard, he drew a 9-iron from 115 yards to within a few feet for birdie.

Daley, 43, of Scottsdale, Ariz., needed five extra holes to advance to his fourth sectional qualifier (Columbus, Ohio). He advanced to the U.S. Open in 2000 at Pebble Beach.

Daley outlasted fellow Nationwide Tour members Dave Cunningham and Todd Demsey in the playoff.
