Chris Kallmeyer of Philadelphia Cricket Club, Tug Maude of Merion GC and James Finnerty of Radley Run CC led the 110-player field attempting to qualify for 43 spots in the Amateur Championship, to be held June 14-18 at Cedarbrook and Green Valley CCs.
Berkleigh’s 3,600-yard, par 37 back nine and rolling, lightning-fast greens took their toll on much of the field, but the leaders all managed to card, adventurous, even-par rounds.
Kallmeyer had four birdies and four bogeys; Finnerty carded five birds and five bogeys, and Maude ran the gamut, from an eagle and three birdies, to a bogey and two double bogeys.
The leaders were one shot better than Bryant Reyes of Hartefeld National, Drew Panebianco of Talamore at Oak Terrace CC and Scott Elwell of Running Dear GC, each of whom carded 1-over-par 73s.
Patrick O’Brien of North Hills CC had the highlight shot of the day, an ace with an 8-iron on the 169-yard No. 12. He shot an 83.
The 43 qualifiers from Berkleigh will join 34 pre-qualifiers from competition at Little Mill CC and 55 exempt players, based on previous performance, in the 132-man field at the Amateur Championship, where 32 players will qualify for match play.
