GAP, Middle Atlantic travel North for Mason-Dixon MatchesThe Golf Association of Philadelphia and Middle Atlantic Golf Association renew their longstanding rivalry this Saturday and Sunday in the 54th Mason-Dixon Matches set for Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson, N.J.
The matches pit two 12-man teams, including one junior and two seniors, from each association in a four-ball match (held on Saturday) and an individual match (held on Sunday). Each match is worth one point. A possible 18 points are available. In the case of a tie (9-9), the defending association retains the trophy. Representing the Golf Association of Philadelphia are Andy Achenbach of RiverCrest GC & Preserve; Chris Anderson of Wilmington CC; David Brookreson of Huntingdon Valley CC (senior representative); Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC; Robert Galbreath, Jr., of Huntingdon Valley CC (junior representative); Chris Lange of Overbrook GC; David Liotta of Whitemarsh Valley CC; Tug Maude of Merion GC; Frank McFadden of Overbrook GC (senior representative); Jamie Slonis of Tavistock CC and Glenn Smeraglio of Yardley CC. Brian Gillespie of St. Davids GC is the captain. Anderson, Deibert, Galbreath, Jr., Liotta and Maude are Mason-Dixon rookies. Lange is the veteran of the group with 16 prior appearances. Brookreson has played in 13 Mason-Dixon Matches. This will be his first as a senior representative. "It’s a lot of fun because it gives you a chance to compete against guys of equal caliber from down South and measure your game," said Gillespie, 30, of Chesterbrook, Pa. "It’s also an honor because it’s an indication you played well throughout the year or at least at some point in the season." Said Maude, 22, of Wayne, Pa., the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s William Hyndman, III Player of the Year, "I actually really didn’t know about the Mason-Dixon Matches until the beginning of the summer because I’ve never played in full summer schedule before. To be picked and represent the Golf Association of Philadelphia is a huge honor." Last year, the Golf Association of Philadelphia fell 10-8 at the Chevy Chase Club in Chevy Chase, Md. Next year, the Middle Atlantic Golf Association will host the Mason-Dixon Matches. A site is yet to be determined.
