Czerniakowski lead a group of 38 players who qualified for the Middle-Amateur Championship, set for May 25-26 at Spring Mill CC.
The qualifiers from Cavaliers will join 39 players who qualified April 26 at Links GC, headed by Art Kania, Jr. of Overbrook CC who carded a 4-over par 75 in brutally windy conditions.
The qualifiers will compete with 55 players who are exempt from qualifying, based on previous performance, in the 132-man field for the Golf Association’s 22nd Middle-Amateur Championship.
Playing early in the day, Czerniakowski bogeyed the par 4, 370-yard first hole. He got back to even with a bird on the par 3, 177-yard seventh, and went on to card two more birds and two bogeys for his even-par round.
He was one shot better than Mike Danner of Lu Lu CC, who carded a 1-over 72 (36-36). Rich Thon of The Springhaven Club and Fred Taggert of Media Heights GC were another stroke back with 2-over-par 73s.
The Middle Amateur is for golfers 25 years old and above with handicap indexes of 7.0 or lower.
Last year’s Middle Amateur champion, Michael McDermott of Llanarch CC, who was exempt from qualifying for this year’s competition, will be at Spring Mill to defend his title.
