Dave Owens takes inaugural Senior Net Championship
CAPE MAY COURTHOUSE, N.J. – Dave Owens of Melrose CC carded a 5-under-par net 67 to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s inaugural Senior Net Championship Monday at Wildwood G&CC (par-72, 6,287 yards).
Owens posted a 47-41—88-21-67. Runner-up was Willi Jacovini of the host club with a 47-46—93-24-69.
"I had a tough front nine with a 47," Owens said, "but I got it together on the back with a 41. I hit it solid on the back, got a couple good breaks and putted well." It was his first Golf Association of Philadelphia championship.
Competition in the Senior Net Championship was limited to players with handicaps of 10.1 and above.
Michael McCorriston of Jericho National GC won low gross honors with a 40-45—85. Alan Perkins of Links GC carded second low gross with a 46-41—87.
Alfred Corchiani of the host club took the Class A net competition, for players 55-59, with a 45-44—89-18-71. Joseph McCullough of the Philadelphia Publinks GA was Class A low gross with a 48-45—93.
Bob Hillen of the host cub won the Class B net competition, for players 60 and over, with a 46-48—94-21-73. Bob Pauxtis of the host club was Class B low gross with a 43-45—88.
Pauxtis aced the 152-yard, par-3 No. 5 with a 6-iron. "I just had an ugly 8 (on the par-4, 324-yard No. 4)," he said, "so when my next shot rolled into the hole on five, I couldn’t believe it. I saw it, but I couldn’t believe it." It was his fifth ace. A 14-handicapped, he carded a net 74.
George Phillips of the host club captured the Super-Senior Flight, for players 65 and over, with a 52-40—92-27-65. Gordon Meyer of Whitford CC was low gross for the Super Seniors with a 43-37—80.
Super-Seniors, electing to play 5,784 yards from senior tees, were not eligible for overall championship prizes.
