Levittown’s Ault equals course record
to head U.S. Amateur leaderboard

HAVERTOWN, Pa.–Chris Ault of Levittown, Pa., equaled a competitive round Rolling Green GC course record with a 7-under-par 63 (par 70, 6,697 yards) in the opening round of the U.S. Amateur Championship Qualifier on Monday. The Qualifier, administered by the Golf Association of Philadelphia, is being held at both Rolling Green GC and Llanerch. Players compete on 18 holes at each venue over two days.

Christopher Gold of Haddonfield, N.J., Bryant Reyes of West Chester, Pa., and Billy Stewart of Devon, Pa., all competing at Llanerch CC (par 71, 6,720 yards), finished at 4-under-par 67. Tim Hager of Ivyland, Pa., 17, posted a 3-under-par 67 at Rolling Green GC.

Players will flip golf courses for tomorrow’s final round. Play begins at 7:30 a.m. A playoff, if necessary, will be held following the completion of play at Llanerch CC. A total of nine qualifying positions are available.

The 105^th U.S. Amateur is set for Aug. 22-28 at Merion GC in Ardmore, Pa.

Ault, 19, a sophomore at East Carolina University, netted an incredible 10 birdies in his 18 holes.

He opened with red digits on Nos. 1 (par 4, 394 yards), 2 (par 4, 445 yards) and 4 (par 4, 373 yards). He missed a short par putt on No. 6 (par 3, 203 yards) to give a shot back, but recorded birdies on holes Nos. 7-9 to make the turn at 5-under-par 31.

He dropped a sand wedge to five feet on the first hole, made a 10 footer on the second and a nice 15-footer birdie chance on the third. Ault made a run of the mill four on the par 5, 7^th (500 yards), knocked his approach to an inch on No. 8 (par 4, 418 yards) and drained a 20-foot birdie on the 614-yard, 9^th hole.

On the long par 3, 10^th (243 yards), Ault made a nice up and down to save par. He registered birdies on Nos. 11 (par 4, 426 yards), from 15 feet, and 12 (par 4, 343 yards), from three feet, before recording back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15. He missed the green on the par 3 14^th (201 yards) and then three putted the 15^th (par 4, 375 yards).

Ault knocked a 9-iron to five feet on No. 16 (par 3, 183 yards) and two-putted from six feet for an easy birdie on No. 17 (par 5, 501 yards). On the final hole (par 4, 485 yards), he made a nice up and down from the right side short of the green.

"I felt like I could make a birdie from anywhere," said Ault. "It seemed like today was easy. I was never really in any trouble."

Ault said he has carded a 63 before at college, but not during a competitive round.

The member of Spring Mill CC has just one more day to a likely date with Merion GC.

"That’s all I want to do is qualify for the Amateur," said Ault, who made the U.S. Junior in 2003. "That was my only goal for the summer."

Ault has never qualified for the U.S. Amateur.

Gold, Reyes and Stewart all opened their U.S. Amateur bids at Llanerch CC.

Gold, 18, carded nine birdies, along with five bogeys and four pars in his round. In fact, Gold, a member of Little Mill CC, posted six front-side birdies on holes Nos. 2 (par 4, 425 yards) 3 (par 4, 464 yards), 5, 7-9 for a front nine 33.

He registered additional birdies on Nos. 13, 15 and 16. On the day, he registered just 21 putts.

Gold made his first U.S. Amateur Championship last summer at Winged Foot GC.

Reyes, 23, has missed the U.S. Amateur field by a shot the past three years.

Another solid round tomorrow will end that near-miss streak.

Reyes, who started on the backside, made the turn in even-par 35. He finished strong with four birdies and two nice pars saves on Nos. 5 and 8.

"It would be awesome," said Reyes of making the field, "especially with Merion being one of most historic golf courses in the world."

Stewart, a longtime member of Llanerch CC, captured the club championship this past Sunday.

The 21-year-old St. Joseph’s senior-to-be carded seven birdies and three bogeys. He made the turn in 2-under-par 34 and finished in 2-under-par 33.

"I played well yesterday (he shot a 67 in the morning), obviously, and it carried it over to today," said Stewart, who qualifier for the U.S. Amateur in 2001 at East Lake GC in Georgia. "I’ve been in this spot before and made it and been in this spot before and missed it. If I go out and shoot under par tomorrow, everything will take care of itself."

The year Stewart qualified for the Amateur, he posted a first round 65 at Overbrook GC. Last year he posted a 68 at North Hills CC in the first round before falling in the afternoon at Huntingdon Valley CC.

Stewart birdied holes Nos. 5 (par 5, 570 yards), 6 (par 4, 420 yards) and 9 (par 5, 483 yards). He added a good birdie on the difficult 11^th (par 4, 460 yards) and three more red figures on two of the shortish par 4s (No. 13, 346 yards and No. 18, 295 yards) and par 5 16^th (503 yards).

In all, a field of 226 players competed at the two golf courses.
