Chung takes medallist honors, Davis continues roll

ELVERSON, Pa.–David Chung, a top Junior player from Fayetteville, N.C., carded a course record 64 at Stonewall’s North Course (par 70, 6,603 yards), and Kyle Davis of Kennett Square, Pa., the reigning Amateur Champion, head a contingent of six players advancing to the 106th U.S. Amateur Championship on Aug. 21-27 at Hazeltine National GC in Chaska, Minn.

Chung finished the 36-hole U.S. Amateur Qualifier conducted by the Golf Association of Philadelphia on both of Stonewall’s courses (North Course/Old Course, par 70, 6,652 yards) at 6-under-par 134. Davis tied for second at 5-under 135 with Andrew Kay, 17, of Pittsford, N.Y. Also advancing were Adam Cohan, 20, of Wayne, Pa. (4-under 136), Billy Stewart, 22, of Devon, Pa. (3-under 135) and Brad Doster, 21, of Orlando, Fla. Stewart and Doster survived a three player, for the final two qualifying positions, playoff.

Chung, 16, made national headlines in 2004 when he fell in the U.S. Junior Amateur final at age 14. A victory at that time would have displaced Tiger Woods as the youngest Junior Champion. He still stands as the youngest finalist.

“I said to myself 4 under would be a good score and it still might get in,” said Chung, who fired an even-par 70 in the first round at the Old Course. “It feels really good to get the job done here, now it is time to prepare for the U.S. Amateur.”

Chung is a home schooled junior who will be making his second U.S. Amateur appearance. He failed to make the cut two years ago at Winged Foot GC.

In his record setting 64, Chung carded seven birdies and a lone bogey. His final red score came on No. 8 (par 5, 554 yards) when he knocked a wedge to seven feet and made the birdie putt.

Locally, it’s been the summer of Davis.

The 20 year old is the reigning Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur Champion and placed third in the Philadelphia Open, the top finish by an amateur. In addition, he carded a 60 in the Eastern Amateur in Virginia earlier in the summer where he placed in the top 5 and last week tied for second in the Pennsylvania Amateur at Moselem Springs GC.

“Six spots may seem like a lot but you never know what’s going to happen in these qualifiers,” said Davis, who was 1-under par at the Old Course in the morning and 4-under par at the North Course in the afternoon. “I gained a lot of confidence when I shot 1 under at [this course] because this place is so hard.”

In his second round, Davis posted six birdies and two bogeys. He stood at 3 under late in the round before draining a 12-foot birdie chance on No. 16 (par 4, 469 yards) and then lofting a 95-yard sand wedge to three feet on No. 18 (par 5, 524 yards).

“I’ve played this well for a long period when I wasn’t as a good a player as I am now,” said Davis, a sophomore to-be at the University of Central Florida, “but never at this level.”

This will be Davis’ first appearance in the U.S. Amateur. He’s failed to qualify in his prior two attempts.

Kay, a high school senior, will be making his first trip to the U.S. Am.

Cohan, a red-shirt sophomore, heads to his second straight year National Championship. He qualified for last year’s event at Merion GC.

Stewart, who is making his third appearance, recorded perhaps the most dramatic shot of the day, chipping in on the first playoff hole, No. 9 (par 3, 219 yards), after being long, over the bunker to the top right from about 40 feet for birdie.

“I hit it the way I wanted to but I thought I hit it a little bit too far to the right,” said Stewart, who recently graduating from St. Joseph’s University. “It kept coming and coming and I said that is going to go in.”

Doster heads to his first U.S. Amateur after outlasting Michael McDermott of Havertown, Pa., for the final spot. He carded a par on the second hole.

NOTES–Christopher Gold of Haddonfield, N.J. tied Chung for the North Course record with a 64 in the afternoon as well … A field of 156 players opened the day with Championship aspirations … Qualifying for the U.S. Amateur is conducted at 98 national sites with a total of 312 players, including those with exempt status, competing in the championship proper.
