Concord’s DellaFranco tops
Mid-Am Qualifier at Talamore CC

AMBLER, Pa. - Jeff DellaFranco of Concord CC carded a 3-over-par 74 to earn medallist honors at a cool and overcast Talamore CC (par 71, 6,602 yards) Thursday. DellaFranco led the field of 133 players attempting to earn one of the 45 qualifying spots and ties available for the 25^th edition of the Golf Association of Philadelphia Middle-Amateur Championship set for May 21-22 at Fieldstone GC.

Thursday’s qualifier was the first of two Middle-Amateur Championship qualifiers used to determine who will play in the silver anniversary of the Championship later this month. The second qualifier will take place on Monday, May 5 at White Clay Creek CC in Wilmington, Del.

DellaFranco, 37, carded birdies on hole Nos. 7 (par 4, 379 yards) and 13 (par 5, 587 yards) en route to topping the qualifier.

"I just came up here, put a peg in the ground and figured if I hit fairways and greens I’d be pretty good," he said. "I started pretty solid and hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens so I didn’t put much pressure on myself."

The Chester Springs, Pa., resident commented that when his tee shots are fairly accurate the rest of his game follows suit.

"Usually if I drive the ball well I’m a good enough iron player and good enough putter that I don’t get in too much trouble," DellaFranco said. "I drove the ball pretty solidly and just hit most of the middle of the greens, which is where most of the [flagsticks] were today."

But it was not just his iron play that helped him out Thursday. DellaFranco also pointed to his past experience of qualifying for last year’s Mid-Am at Stonewall as a source of his solid play.

"I knew that if I just played conservative and played my own game that I would be OK," he said. "I took a little bit of past history and realized that I didn’t have to shoot 68 to get in. I knew that I had to keep it around par or a couple over and that would be more than enough."

Added DellaFranco, "Normally I don’t play a better until the end of the year, so I’m happy with where my game is at this early in the season. I made a few changes in my golf swing over the winter and it seems to be working out."

As the day came to an end, the cut-line landed on 82.

Chip Lutz of LedgeRock GC took the 24^th Middle-Amateur Championship at Stonewall’s North Course last year after recording an even-par 140. The win was the second Middle-Amateur Championship for Lutz who also took the 1998 Mid-Am. when the tournament was still a one-day, 18-hole event. Today, it’s a two-day, 36-hole competition.

The Middle-Amateur is for players 25 years of age and older.

The GAP Middle-Amateur started in 1984, three years after the USGA created the U.S. Mid-Am as a formal championship for post-college amateurs. The Association followed suit with the USGA in creating a Mid-Am, but initially differed in its administration of the tournament in a couple of respects.

The most obvious difference was the age requirement. Prior to 2001, the GAP Mid-Am was for players 30 years of age and older. That Committee reviewed and revised that age requirement in 2001 to match the USGA's guidelines of 25 years of age or older for eligible players. Also at that point, the Committee changed the format of the event to a two-day stroke play tournament (instead of a one-day medal play event) with a cut to the low 70 players and ties after the first round. The field begins with 132 players. Players must have a GAP/USGA Handicap Index of 7.0 or lower.

Founded in 1897, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) is the oldest regional golf association in the United States and serves as the principal ruling body of amateur golf in its region. Its 136 Member Clubs and 56,000 individual members are spread across parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. The purpose of the Association is simple: To promote, protect and preserve the game of golf in the region.
