• William Hyndman, III earned his first of three Golf Association of Philadelphia

  WILLIAM HYNDMAN, III

  Amateur Championships in 1935 at the age of 19. Then, the youngest winner of the Amateur. Some 48 years later, at the age of 67, he became the oldest person to win a USGA national championship. In between, Hyndman built an unbelievable Amateur resume. He is a 10-time Patterson Cup winner, three-time Amateur Champion, two-time Open winner and six-time Silver Cross Award victor. He was a U.S. Amateur Championship runner-up in 1955 and two-time U.S. Senior Amateur Champion (1973, 1983). The most amazing fact about Hyndman’s accomplishments, though, is that he won 13 of those GAP titles (six Patterson Cups, three Silver Crosses, two Amateurs and two Philadelphia Opens) and his two USGA championships after the age of 40. He would also play in nine Masters Tournaments starting in 1956 and be named to five Walker Cups beginning in 1957. Hyndman won a total of four Crump Cups, was a three-time British Amateur runner-up and two-time Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament of Champions winner.

  
  

J. WOOD PLATT

• J. Wood Platt was the first legendary figure of Philadelphia golf. He won seven Amateur Championships titles from 1920-42; seven Silver Cross Awards from 1922-39; and four Patterson Cup (1926-41) trophies. He was the inaugural winner of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship in 1955. Platt turned his focus to the administrative arm of golf in 1945 and became the only two-time president of the Association in 1952-53 and 1956. Also, Platt was instrumental in creating the charitable arm of the Association that bears his name, the Platt Caddie Scholarship, which continues to help young men and women continue their education to this day.






R. JAY SIGEL

• R. Jay Sigel is arguably the greatest male amateur golfer ever born and raised in the Philadelphia region and state of Pennsylvania. He holds the record for Golf Association of Philadelphia Open Championship victories with six and, in all, was a 19-time Major winner (including Silver Crosses). Nationally and internationally, Sigel dominated, winning five titles in a remarkable six-year span. From 1982-87, he took two U.S. Amateur Championships and three U.S. Middle-Amateur Championships. In fact, at the time, Sigel’s 1982 U.S. Amateur victory made him only the 13^th individual to win both the U.S. and British Amateur championships. He took the British Amateur in 1979. He represented the United States on nine straight Walker Cup teams from 1977-93 and served as a playing captain in 1983 and 1985. He represented the United States at the World Amateur Team Championship seven times; captured 11 Pennsylvania Golf Association Amateur Championships; was the low amateur in the British Open Championship in 1980 and is a nine-time Crump Cup champion.
