Bring a friend to the Spring NetAre you a GAP club member who plans on participating in this year’s Spring Net Championship?Bring a friend. Members competing in the Spring Net Championship, which will be held June 1 at Raven’s Claw GC, can now bring a non-GAP member to participate in the tournament. The Association decided to implement such a change after seeing how successful events that allow guests can be. “We’re trying to expose more people to Association tournaments,” Kirby Martin, the Association’s Director of Competitions, said. “I think this is a good thing for the Association and a nice thing for the players. I didn’t want to add another tournament to the list, but I felt that we could take a tournament that had moderate participation and open it up to non-GAP members.” Golfers over 18 years old with a handicap limit of 36 are eligible to compete in the Spring Net Championship. The GAP member division will feature three flights determined by GAP/USGA Handicap Index. Friends will compete in a separate division, and flights will depend on the number of participants. Terry Sawyer, chairman of the Association’s Golf Administration Committee, believes newcomers will enjoy the Spring Net Championship. “We at the Association have been trying to give non-GAP players an opportunity to compete and experience the feeling of playing in a GAP Association event,” he said. “By allowing our members to bring a guest and have that experience, we hope these players will see how a GAP tournament is run and get the feeling and excitement of tournament golf at GAP.” Robert Felter of Lancaster CC shot 3-under-par 67 (net) to win last year’s Spring Net Championship at Bucks County GC. Greg Smith of Brandywine CC finished first in the second flight and second-place overall with a net 68. The Association has named an overall winner since 2003. The Spring Net Championship, formerly known as First Handicap Championship, began in 1946. This marks the first year that Raven’s Claw GC in Pottstown, Pa., will host the event. Registration for the Spring Net Championship begins April 20. The entry fee is $75. Entry forms may be obtained at www.gapgolf.org.
