Legends video series: Reading CC's Herman J. Fry

The Golf Association of Philadelphia “Legends” video series unveils its third installment: a featured interview of Reading CC’s Herman J. Fry.

Fry forged a silently spectacular amateur career. He won two Association Majors: 1974 Amateur Championship at Cedarbrook CC and the 1984 Joseph H. Patterson Cup at Woodcrest CC. In the first, he defeated Frank Magee of Huntingdon Valley CC, 3&2, and in the latter, he carded a 36-hole total of 147 to triumph in the Association’s stroke-play championship.

Fry, of Reading, Pa., also found success in Berks County Golf Association tournaments. He captured the BCGA Amateur crown in 1970 and 1977, and in 1991, he tied Chip Lutz in regulation, but fell in a five-hole playoff at Heidelberg CC. Fry also set scoring records at Galen Hall CC and Green Hills GC.

But golf was never truly a priority for Fry. He focused wholly on family and work and played in few tournaments annually. Today, he works as a caddie at Stonewall and remains involved with the game. Fry has won two Caddie Tournaments (2003 and 2005) and continues to participate in the event.

The “Legends” video series features prominent local players recalling their experiences and accomplishments both on and off the golf course. O. Gordon Brewer, Jr. of Pine Valley GC and Lincoln Roden, III of Huntingdon Valley CC have also been profiled.
