Spring Ford’s Foley scorches West Chester G&CC for a 4-under 32WEST CHESTER, Pa.–John Foley’s time on the practice range is proving well spent. The 13-year-old from Royersford, Pa. blistered West Chester G&CC (par 36, 2,639 yards) for a spectacular 4-under-par 32 in the Junior-Junior Boys’ Championship Qualifier on Monday to earn medalist honors in a field of 39 players. The Junior-Junior is a nine-hole tournament.Foley, an eighth grader at Spring Ford Intermediate School, registered an efficient five pars and four birdies en route to a career round.
First-round matches begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow with second-round matches to follow. The 18-hole final is set for 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Foley opened his round already warm before truly starting to sizzle. He knocked a sand wedge on No. 1 (par 5, 439 yards) from 88 yards to three feet for the ensuing birdie putt and quick start. Three straight pars followed, before Foley carded back-to-back red figures on the next two holes. He dropped a sand wedge from 80 yards on No. 5 (par 4, 301 yards) to four feet and then drained a massive 45-foot birdie attempt on No. 6 (par 4, 321 yards) after his 8-iron from 142 yards stopped on the front part of the green. On No 8 (par 5, 421 yards), Foley finished his birdie barrage when a driver and hybrid landed just short of the putting surface in two. He chipped up to a foot and tapped in for a 4. Foley finished his work with a 7-iron to 15 feet on No. 9 (par 3, 146 yards) and two putted for par. “I was striking the ball really well. I had a lot of sand wedges into every green and was hitting them close,” said Foley. And was he nervous about going low? “No. It kind of pumped me up,” said Foley. “I wanted to keep playing good golf and making sure my ball striking was good.” It was a pretty good 24 hours for Foley. Yesterday, he shot a 37 to win Spring Ford CC’s Junior-Junior Club Championship. This was Foley’s first Golf Association of Philadelphia event. He competes in the Philadelphia Section Junior Tour and on the Junior Golfers’ Association in New Jersey. Seeded No. 2, after carding a 1-under 35, is Grant Schumaker of the Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour. Schumaker birdied his final hole to finish in red figures. The cut line for the Championship Flight landed at 39. There was a three-player-for-two-spots playoff. Quinn Dolan of Rolling Green GC and Jacob Klaus of Tavistock CC advanced.
