Thomas M. Hyndman obituary

  Thomas M. Hyndman of Huntingdon Valley passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Abington Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was 64.

  Mr. Hyndman was born in Abington and later raised in Huntingdon Valley, where he graduated from Lower Moreland High School. While there, he excelled on both the basketball and golf teams, winning the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association State Golf Championship in 1964.

  In 1963 Mr. Hyndman won the Golf Association of Philadelphia's Junior Golf Championship and several years later lost in the finals of the Philadelphia Amateur Championship.

  Mr. Hyndman, with his father, William Hyndman III, won the prestigious Anderson Memorial Four-ball at Winged Foot Golf Club, and with Gordon Brewer the Hoffner Memorial at Sandy Run.

  Due to a severe case of rheumatoid arthritis, Mr. Hyndman ended his golfing career while still in his mid 30s.

  Mr. Hyndman earned a business degree at Miami Dade Junior College and for 40 years worked in the insurance business, initially with The William Hyndman III Insurance Agency and at the end of his career with Willis of Pennsylvania, retiring in 2008.

  Mr. Hyndman was a devout Christian who would use his vacation every year to travel to countries such as China and Russia to perform missionary work and preach the gospel. He was a member of Abington Presbyterian Church and in later years, Faith Community Church in Oreland.

  Mr. Hyndman spent much of his recreational time following Philadelphia sports teams and being a dog enthusiast.

  Mr. Hyndman is survived by his mother, Virginia Keevill Hyndman; a brother, William Hyndman IV; a sister, Faith Hyndman; nephews, William Hyndman V and John W. Richards Jr.; and nieces, Wendy Hyndman Combs and Virginia Richards-Senn.

  Funeral services will be held privately.
