Philmont's Crescenzo tops Amateur Qual. at White Clay Creek
WILMINGTON, Del. — Under the advisement of his coaches and teammates at Temple University, Matthew Crescenzo of Philmont CC decided to fill his competitive golf schedule for 2011.

The Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 111th Amateur represented one of the items on his list. Crescenzo can cross off earning a spot in the field.
The Cheltenham, Pa. resident carded a 1-over-par 73 to earn medalist honors in an Amateur Championship Qualifier Monday at White Clay Creek CC (par 72, 6,615 yards). He led a field of 88 players attempting to earn one of 21 qualifying positions and ties available for the Championship Proper, which will be held June 14-16 & 18 at Manufacturers G&CC.
“I hit the ball pretty well off the tee, and when I hit it bad, it was still good,” Crescenzo, 20, said. “I got up-and-down a bunch and had a good short game.”
Crescenzo registered four red figures on the day. On No. 5 (par 4, 390 yards), he powered his 9-iron 150 yards to eight feet. An aggressive Crescenzo drove the enticing No. 9 (par 4, 270 yards) green and two-putted from 15-feet. He pressed down harder on the pedal by using his 5-wood to reach the No. 15 (par 5, 547 yards) green in two strokes. Crescenzo rolled his 70-foot eagle effort to within inches of the cup. He hit a knock-down pitching wedge 130 yards to seven-feet on No. 16 (par 4, 390 yards) and cleaned up the birdie putt.
Back-to-back blemishes on Nos. 17 (par 3, 173 yards) and 18 (par 4, 345 yards) somewhat softened Crescenzo’s swagger. On the first, he steered his 8-iron into the water hazard and went on to card a double bogey.
“In the practice round, I hit 7-iron and it went way deep. I was up on the hill,” he said of the tee shot. “So I thought 8-iron would be good, even with a little bit of wind. I had the right club, and I just drew it a little bit.”
Crescenzo whacked his 58-degree wedge 70 yards to 40-feet behind the hole location on No. 18. His downhill birdie putt stopped four-feet shy, and Crescenzo watched his par attempt lip out of the jar.
“I was kind of out of it mentally. I was still angry [about No. 17] and kind of let myself go,” Crescenzo said.
Final exams prevented Crescenzo, a sophomore at Temple, from giving the Association’s Amateur Championship a shot in the past. He made the Owls’ golf team last year, but needed to red-shirt because he transferred from Fayetteville College in North Carolina.
“The school was alright and the team was fine,” he said. “I live in Philadelphia. I was playing good golf and talked to one of the kids on the team [Andrew Mason of Huntingdon Valley CC] when I was home last summer. He’s the one who helped me.”
Crescenzo looks forward to the busy golf season ahead.
“I want to see how good I can play,” he said. “I’m feeling good right now. Today’s the best I’ve played in awhile.”
At the end of the day, the cut line fell to 78.
Monday’s qualifier was the second of two Amateur Championship qualifiers used to determine who will play in the Championship Proper. Chris Esbenshade of Bent Creek CC carded a 1-under-par 70 to earn medalist honors in a qualifier held at Meadowlands CC.
