Team Philadelphia looks to retain Compher CupThe Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 2011 Compher Cup Matches team is set.
The matches will be held Wednesday, April 27 at Trump National GC – Colt’s Neck in Colt’s Neck, N.J. To date, the Golf Association of Philadelphia leads the series, 32–12–4. The matches started, but were rained out, in 2005. Brown, the reigning William Hyndman, III Player of the Year, makes his third appearance and first as captain. “I am honored to represent the Philadelphia team in this year's Compher Cup,” said Brown, 37, of Cheltenham, Pa. “Playing alongside the guys we compete with is a treat, so I look forward to this day each year. This squad seems strong so I feel very good about holding on to the Cup.” Last April, the GAP regained the Cup with a 11.5–6.5 victory at a breezy and chilly Gulph Mills GC. It was GAP’s fourth victory in the last five years. John Brennan of Spring Ford CC is making his third consecutive Compher Cup Matches appearance. "There is no better feeling than representing the GAP and your home golf course in one of the best exhibitions of golf between two great local golf organizations,” said Brennan, 32, of Audubon, Pa. “It should be a very exciting match. I’m looking forward to playing a Trump golf course. I hope he isn't there to say ‘you're fired’ to me at the end of the match due to my play." Bill Jeremiah, 42, of West Grove, Pa. and Bidermann GC, is a Compher Cup rookie. The 2010 Middle-Amateur Championship runner-up is a New Jersey native and is looking forward to going home. “I grew up in Westfield at Plainfield so I’ve known what the Compher Cup is for 30 years,” said Jeremiah, who competed in his first Mason-Dixon Matches last fall. “I’m going to go have fun and make some new friends. I approach the Matches the same way I do with any tournament; do the best I can with every shot and let the chips fall where they may.” Fred Compher, a former New Jersey State Golf Association president, conceived the neighborhood matches after leaving his post in 1959. Compher donated a silver trophy that year earmarked for such a rivalry. In 1961, association representatives Bob Jacobson of New Jersey and Richard Ollmah of GAP completed the details. In 1962, the first Compher Cup matches took place. That year, the NJSGA side forged a 5–1 lead in the morning foursomes’ competitions and held serve in the afternoon singles matches for an 11.5-6.5 victory. After the New Jersey victory, Compher himself, who was known at the time as the most successful NJSGA president in its history, presented the trophy “to promote golf between the groups.” For a year-by-year history, click here.
