HVCC’s Mason cements Open Championship berth at home course
CINNAMINSON, N.J.–Andrew Mason of Huntingdon Valley CC, fresh off a semifinal appearance in last week’s Amateur Championship, delivered a sparkling 5-under-par 66 performance on Tuesday at Riverton CC (par 71, 6,430 yards) to earn medalist honors and a berth into the 107th Open Championship.

In all, 24 players from the field of 130 competitors (105 amateurs and 25 professionals) advanced into the Championship proper set for July 20 at Mason’s home club of Huntingdon Valley CC. The Open Championship itself consists of 72 players and is a one-day, 36-hole event.
The cut line fell at 71.
The final Open Qualifier is scheduled for tomorrow at Radley Run CC.
This is familiar territory for Mason. In one of last year’s Open Championship Qualifiers at French Creek GC, Mason also finished as medalist.
“I’m real happy. I worked pretty hard in the off-season with my coach Brian Quinn of Temple University and BQ Golf Academy. I worked really hard on my putting and flighting shots better,” said Mason, 22, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. “I can’t wait to play Huntingdon Valley [in the Open]. Today was one of the day’s this summer I targeted to play well because I wanted to give myself an opportunity to play before the home crowd.”
Mason’s extra motivation, and tip-top game, had the Temple University senior at full throttle the entire round.

He birdied Nos. 1 (par 4, 350 yards) and 7 (par 5, 525 yards) to ease into red figures before registering under-par scores on holes 9-11. He escaped from the left greenside bunker on No. 9 (par 5, 494 yards) for a 4; knocked a 9-iron from 145 yards to 20 feet on No. 10 (par 4, 426 yards) for birdie and then drained a spectacular 45-footer on No. 11 (par 3, 162 yards) for 2.
An errant tee ball on No. 12 (par 4, 437 yards) resulted in bogey, but Mason responded with birdies on Nos. 16 (par 3, 142 yards), he hit a 9-iron to six feet, and 17 (par 5, 465 yards), he hit an 8-iron to 20 feet and two putted, to stand 6 under with a hole to go.
On No. 18 (par 4, 355 yards), Mason found some thick rough with his drive and the greenside bunker with his second shot before finishing with a bogey.
Last year, competing in his first Open Championship, Mason placed seventh. Could some home course advantage improve his finish this season?
“I think I should have a little bit of an edge,” said Mason, who is finished with athletic eligibility and will graduate Temple this fall with majors in finance and real estate. “I love Huntingdon Valley.” He is the reigning club champion and has already advanced to the semifinals of this year’s event.
Ben Smith of Little Mill CC, who placed second in the New Jersey State Golf Association Amateur two weeks ago, continued his fine play with a 3-under-par 68.
“I wanted to hit fairways and greens and I figured if I did that I would eventually make a couple of birdies,” said the 24-year-old Voorhees, N.J., resident. “I stayed patient and eventually I got some putts to fall.”
Smith carded a workmanlike 14 pars, two birdies, an eagle and a bogey.
He started quickly with a 9-iron from 142 yards to five feet on No. 2 (par 4, 395 yards) for birdie, but bogeyed No. 6 (par 3, 206 yards) when three putting from 60 feet. He immediately bounced back on the seventh hole, a par 5 measuring 525 yards, with a hybrid from 225 yards to 25 feet for an eagle 3. It was par city from there, except for a birdie on No. 17 (par 5, 465 yards). Smith knocked a 4-iron from 210 yards out to just short of the green in the rough and chipped it tight.
This will be Smith's first Open appearance.
