Local trio passes first test at PGA Tour Q-SchoolThree players with Golf Association of Philadelphia ties advanced through the first qualifying stage of PGA Tour Q School. Christopher Gold, Justin Martinson and Nathan Sutherland will now set their respective sites on the next stage, which gets underway Nov. 15.
Martinson, of Avondale, Pa., carded an 11-under-par 277 to finish tied for 17th in a First Stage Qualifier at St. Johns G&CC in St. Augustine, Fla. Oct. 25-28. The 2010 GAP Amateur Champion, fired rounds of 65, 78, 65 and 69 to advance. Martinson, who graduated from the University of Delaware last spring, captured the Delaware State Golf Association’s Open Championship in August. Sutherland, of Wyomissing, Pa., registered a 9-under-par 279 to place tied for 10th in a First Stage Qualifier at PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Oct. 26-29. A recent graduate of Miami University of Ohio, Sutherland posted scores of 70, 69, 73 and 67 to advance. Sutherland’s best performance in a GAP event came in 2007, when he finished as co-runner-up in the 2007 Joseph H. Patterson Cup at Berkleigh CC and Moselem Springs GC. Also, Stu Ingraham, a teaching professional at M Golf Driving Range and Learning Center, advanced through regional qualifying for Champions Tour Q-School. The Newtown Square, Pa. resident carded rounds of 75, 69, 73 and 70 to pass the test at the Palm Course at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. Oct. 26-29. Ingraham was the low professional in the 107th GAP Open Championship at Huntingdon Valley CC. He claimed the 1994 Open in a playoff at Kennett Square G&CC. Four players didn’t make the grade at Q School. They include Vince Covello, a former GAP Junior standout, Mike Meisenzahl, the 2011 Silver Cross Award winner, Greg Pieczynski, the 2008 GAP Open Champion, and Michael Tobiason, a teaching professional at Applecross CC. Meisenzahl, of Medford, N.J., missed the cut by five strokes in a qualifier at St. Johns G&CC.
