Association conducts first-ever GAP TrackMan Combine Challenge

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. — Nearly 50 players braved temperatures that frequently hit the century mark to compete in the first-ever GAP TrackMan Combine Challenge, which was held on July 21-22 at The ACE Club. The top overall score belonged to Senior Division champion Art Jacoby of Commonwealth National Golf Club, who posted a 73 in the unique test. The amateur division champion was Sandy Run Country Club’s Robert Bass, who plays on the golf team at Cabrini College and set the pace with a score of 70. The junior division winner was Plymouth Country Clubs’s Pat Battaglia, who scored a 58.

The Combine, a benchmarking test of 60 shots from 10 different targets, is used to help players identify the strongest and weakest parts of their golf game. It features a player hitting six shots from 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, 160 and 180 yards, as well as six shots with the driver. Each shot is scored based on its proximity to the target line and the target distance. The final results are then uploaded to the TrackMan Web site, where the overall score is calculated.

The current top score is by LPGA Professional Sun Young Yoo, who scored an 87. Luke Donald, one of the world’s top players, has recorded the highest male score on the Combine with an 86. The majority of Division I collegiate golfers have scored a 74 or above.

TrackMan’s Justin Padjen, who represents the company in US Tour Operations and Sales, helped coordinate the event as the company provided three TrackMan units in addition to the one owned by the Golf Association of Philadelphia in order to put as many players through the test as possible.

RON RAMLER
â€śIt was great to see so many members of the Golf Association of Philadelphia come out to The ACE Club to participate in the TrackMan Combine,” Padjen said. “The data acquired in the GAP TrackMan Combine Challenge will only add to the large database already built from golfers around the world that have taken the same TrackMan Combine.”

This is the second time that the Association has conducted the TrackMan Combine. Last fall, the current high score for the area was set as reigning Senior Player of the Year Chip Lutz of LedgeRock GC scored a 76 in a test at Aronimink Golf Club.

Jacoby, the overall winner, proved to be at his best from 140 and 160 yards, as he scored 87 points at each distance. Among all male players to ever take the Combine test, Jacoby’s 140 yard score ranked in the 92nd percentile.

Seventy yards was the best distance for Bass as he ranked in the 92nd percentile among all golfers at that target, with his six shots averaging a carry landing of just 3.4 yards from the target.

For Battaglia, the top junior competitor, the best targets were 100 yards and 180 yards. At the latter distance, Battaglia’s shots were an average of 12.8 yards from the target, ranking him in the 74th percentile among junior male golfers.
