Four share medalist honors in Amateur Qualifier at Penn Oaks
WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Four players carded respective 1 over par 72s to share medalist honors in an Amateur Championship Qualifier at Penn Oaks Golf Club (par 71, 6,575 yards) Thursday. Joseph Fabrizio, Jr. of Aronimink Golf Club, Patrick Phillips of Philadelphia Publinks GA, Grant Skyllas of Moselem Springs Golf Club and Colin Smith of Radley Run Country Club collectively led a field of 150 players attempting to grab one of 34 qualifying positions and ties available for the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 112th Amateur Championship, set for June 12-14 & 16 at Huntingdon Valley Country Club.
Fabrizio, 20, of West Chester, Pa., turned in the event’s best nine hole score, carding a 2 under heading out. He smashed a 7-iron 180 yards into the left bunker on No. 3 (par 5, 478 yards), splashed out to five feet and swept in the birdie putt. On the par 5, 508-yard No. 9, Fabrizio hit a lob wedge 100 yards to 10 feet and drained a downhill left-to-right breaker for birdie.
Three back-nine bogeys thanks to three missed greens prevented a subpar score. Nevertheless, Fabrizio, a sophomore at Villanova University, advanced and feels glad to be a part of the Championship proper.
“I’m excited to play the [Toomey/Flynn] 18 at Huntingdon Valley,” he said. “They have firm greens just like we have at Aronimink, so I’m excited to get out there.”
Phillips, 35, of King of Prussia, Pa., fired three birdies on the day. On No. 5 (par 4, 421 yards), he smacked a 6-iron to four feet; an 8-iron 135 yards out of a “jumpy lie” on No. 6 (par 4, 395 yards) to 12 feet. The 8-iron improved its proficiency on No. 16 (par 4, 326 yards), leaving Phillips with a tap-in for birdie.
With a 9-week old at home, Phillips is balancing his time on and off the course this year.
“I’ve been hit or miss in qualifying for events,” he said. “My game’s sort of rounding into shape. I’d really like to make match play.”
Starting on the back nine, Skyllas, 25, of Reading, Pa., bogeyed two of his first three holes. He missed a two-footer for par on the dogleg right No. 11 (par 4, 358 yards) and couldn’t execute a sand save following a 9-iron tee shot. Skyllas, who owns a McDonald’s in Reading, missed an eight-inch putt to save par on No. 16 (par 4, 336 yards).
Skyllas then fired back-to-back birdies on Nos. 18 (par 4, 365 yards) and 1 (par 4, 331 yards). He knocked a lob wedge 98 yards to three feet on the first, and 112 yards to three feet on the latter. Skyllas converted eight pars to share the medalist post.
“I missed in the right areas. I tried to hit it in the right spots and play smart off the tee,” he said. “I’ve been striking it well lately. I’m thinking more on the course.”
Smith, 23, of West Chester, Pa., registered 15 greens in regulation. Starting on the back nine, he carded two bogeys to muddle seven pars. On No. 15 (par 3, 160 yards), Smith, a recent graduate of Florida Southern, nuked a 6-iron over the green and failed to save par from 20 feet. He reached the No. 17 (par 4, 430 yards) with a 9-iron, ran a 15-footer for birdie five feet past and missed the comebacker. Smith rebounded with a birdie on the par 5, 478-yard No. 3. He drilled a pitching wedge 137 yards to eight feet flag-high and sunk a left-to-right breaker for birdie.
“That really boosted my confidence,” Smith said. “I’m excited about [playing in the Amateur Championship]. I just need to take it one hole at a time. There are plenty out there.”
At the end of the day, the cut line fell to 77.
Thursday’s qualifier was the final used to determine who will play in the Championship Proper next month.
