GAP Fitness: An exercise to improve a golfer’s balance

By Darin Hovis

Balance is key in the golf swing. Without dynamic balance, golfers will slide or sway, which results in distance losses. To correctly rotate and unload all of your potential into the golf ball, balance needs to be addressed. This sequence will help to develop balance.

Start with the feet together and the eyes open.

Raise the leg to parallel with the floor and hold this position.

The final sequence of the progression is a tandem stance with the weak leg trailing.

To make this progression a bit harder you can close your eyes or add an unstable base such as a foam mat. This will further challenge your body's ability to stabilize. I urge you to only add one progression at a time. Once you become comfortable with your eyes closed, you can then add the foam mat. This quick and simple exercise will give you direct feedback. Work on your weaknesses to become a better player. Start in the gym to develop dynamic balance. I guarantee it will lead to increased power and stability in the swing.
