Philadelphia Golf Legends: Philmont's Bob LevyBob Levy made quite the first impression on the Golf Association of Philadelphia world in 1978. The Philmont Country Club member finished third in the Joseph H. Patterson Cup and advanced to the Amateur Championship Final, where he fell to Charles Bolling, Jr. of Gulph Mills GC, 6&5. His efforts immediately thrust Levy into the amateur spotlight. He is the latest player to be featured in the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Legends video series. The first part chronicles Levy’s golf career from 1978-82. During that time, the Southampton, Pa. resident built upon his successes. Levy placed tied for second in the 1979 Patterson Cup with Buddy Marucci, captured the 1979 Tournament of Champions and finished as runner-up in the 1980 Amateur Championship. With the swing of a golf club, Levy’s career changed instantly in 1982; he cracked two vertabrae in his spine. The second part outlines Levy’s return to the competitive circuit following a five-year absence. Levy picked up right where he left off — winning the 1987 Middle-Amateur Championship and earning runner-up honors in the 1988 Patterson Cup. Overall, Levy represented the Golf Association of Philadelphia in seven Compher Cups (1979-83, 88-89) and four Mason-Dixon Matches (1978-81). Today, Levy, 60, still enjoys golf, though his game isn’t at the prominent level it once reached. Levy suffers from Parkinson’s disease. Launched in 2010, the Legends video series features prominent local players recalling their experiences and accomplishments both on and off the golf course.
