A Walk Through Time

GAP is the oldest state or regional golf association in the country. It started courtesy of a friendly competition – the Team Matches – and has grown into the preeminent golf association in the country. Along the way, golf history has been made.

Team GAP heads south for 25th Senior Challenges Matches

  The Golf Association of Philadelphia will compete in the 25th Senior Challenge Matches Oct. 2 at The Elkridge Club in Baltimore, Md.

  The Senior Challenge Matches feature eight seniors from four associations, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Philadelphia, competing in a stroke play event.

  The top six scores from each association count toward the final total. The Maryland State Golf Association won last year's event at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club with an overall score of 461 — seven shots clear of the GAP squad.

  The following players will represent the Golf Association of Philadelphia.

Name: Thomas Bartolacci, Jr.
Club: Saucon Valley Country Club
Appearance: Seventh (2006-10, 2012)
2013 Accomplishments: Quarterfinalist in the Brewer Cup at Lookaway … defeated Overbrook’s Ray Thompson in a sudden-death playoff to win the 43rd Senior Amateur Championship at Huntingdon Valley; carded consecutive 72s … posted a Top 10 finish in the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s Senior Amateur Championship … currently ranked third in the Senior Player of the Year standings.

Appearance: Sixth (2004-05, 2007-08, 2012)
2013 Accomplishments: Won the Super-Senior title in the Francis B. Warner Cup (Gross) at White Manor … defeated Moorestown Field Club’s Jon Mabry in a sudden-death playoff at RiverCrest to win the Frank H. Chapman Cup (Gross) … won Super-Senior title in The Brewer Cup; defeated Sakima’s David Jordan, 2&1, in the final … won the Super-Senior title in the Senior Amateur Championship; carded rounds of 73 and 68 … captured the Super-Senior Silver Cross Award by a record 20 strokes with a score of 288 … 2013 Super-Senior Player of the Year.

2013 Accomplishments: In Brewer Cup, survived an 8-for-1 playoff in stroke-play qualifying to advance to match play before running table to become tournament’s first multi-winner. McCool also won the 2010 Brewer Cup. This year, McCool defeated Mike Quinn of Edgmont Country Club, 2&1, in final … won Pennsylvania Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship at Country Club of Scranton with closing-round 69 (3 under), equaling tournament’s low round … T10 in the GAP Senior Amateur Championship … placed fourth in the Senior Player of the Year standings.

Appearance: Third (2008, 2011)

Also won Senior Silver Cross in 2007 and 2011 … fell in a playoff in the 43rd Senior Amateur Championship to Thomas Bartolacci, Jr. Bartolacci birdied the first extra hole … quarterfinalist in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship, where he fell to Lutz, 4&3 … placed second behind Lutz in Frank H. Chapman Memorial (Gross) … tied for third in Warner Cup (Gross) … placed second in the Senior Player of the Year standings.
