A Daily dose of Chapman (Net) victory for Moorestown member
NORTH HILLS, Pa. — Good things happen when David Daily avoids trouble on the golf course. Such was the case Tuesday at Lu Lu Country Club (par 71, 5,825 yards). Daily, a Moorestown Field Club member, steered clear of danger and posted 43 points to take the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 75th Frank H. Chapman Memorial (Net).
Bala Golf Club’s Gary Ames finished second with 42.
“I kept the ball in the play,” Daily, 61, of Moorestown, N.J., said. “It was just [a case of] putting yourself in positions where you can succeed. On the back nine, I was really sharp. The big hole was No. 17.”
On the 497-yard par 5, Daily equipped a rescue club for his second shot and lost sight of it soon after contact. Thinking it crossed the out-of-bounds boundary to the right, he played a provisional. Mother Nature forgave Daily’s error, however, as the trees kept his original ball in play. Daily then drilled a 4-rescue 160 yards to two feet for birdie. That conversion, and a pair of pars prior, provided Daily with 40 points heading to the 18th tee. He secured victory with a routine 4 on the par 4, 366-yard closer.
A wild par on No. 5 (par 4, 375 yards) also highlighted the achievement. Daily missed the green with a 5-iron from 150 yards.
“I ended up in the rough on the right side on a slope,” he said. “I hit it and it went through the green to the rough on the other side of the pin. I was only maybe eight feet away and I chipped it in. To be honest, if it didn’t hit the pin, it’s probably six or seven feet by. It was fortuitous, to say the least.”
The game giveth, and the game taketh away. The par 3, 153-yard No. 6 stood out as Daily’s “only bad hole on the day.” With a breeze in his face, he tried to guide a 4-rescue but instead goosed it into the back bunker. He walked away with a double bogey — and a trophy eventually.
Consider Daily’s effort Tuesday the exception to an “erratic” golf game.
“I have moments when I play well. If I keep myself out of trouble, I’m usually in a situation where I’m putting for par,” Daily, a 16-handicap, said. “It’s hard making putts out here. The greens are little tricky, especially around the hole itself. When I didn’t make a putt, I had an eight-inch or one foot tap-in.”
Daily, now retired, operated Cho-Pat, a manufacturer of sports medicine supports such as elbow and knee straps. He donned one of his creations Tuesday to support and stabilize a torn meniscus.
Frank H. Chapman, a Whitemarsh Valley Country Club member, served as the Association’s secretary-treasurer for 23 years. He died on June 7, 1955 at the age of 88. The Net tournament is held in his honor.
