Goodrich, Medico share medalist honors in Junior Boys’ Qualifier
CINNAMINSON, N.J. — A rising star and a past champion shared the top seat in the 100th Junior Boys’ Championship Qualifier at a gorgeous Riverton Country Club (par 70, 6,257 yards) Monday. Merchantville Country Club’s Connor Goodrich, an imposing ball-striker who stands a stout 6’4”, and Fox Hill Country Club’s Mariano Medico, the event’s 2012 titleholder, carded respective 1-under-par 70s to share medalist honors in the 18-hole stroke play portion.
Order of scorecard return determined seeding for match play, which begins tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. As a result, Goodrich, who played in the day’s second group, is the No. 1 seed, Medico No. 2.
“I was battling a lot,” Goodrich, 17, of Woodbury, N.J., said. “Every time I would get a birdie, I would get a bogey. I would have to bounce back off of that. I started off confident. I felt like I was going to make a lot of putts because when I putted on the practice green, they were so smooth and perfect.”
“I putted pretty well today. It was a solid day of golf,” Medico, 18, of Shavertown, Pa., said. “It’s crazy how bad my luck has been in these last couple tournaments. In the [Golf Association of Philadelphia] Amateur, I missed the cut by one because I had a two-shot penalty. I’ve just been getting a lot of weird things that have been happening. It’s good to get a couple good breaks and to start playing well. My game’s right where I want it to be.”
In addition to posting identical scores, Goodrich and Medico both eagled the par 5, 484-yard No. 9. Goodrich chipped in after leaving a 3-iron just short of the putting surface. Medico smashed a 6-iron 195 yards to 10 feet and executed the downhill putt.
“I had this weird stance, but I felt confident that I was going to put it pretty close,” Goodrich said of the chip-in. “It just hit perfect, ran out and dropped right in.”
Goodrich, an incoming senior at Gloucester Catholic High School, also inked red on Nos. 5 (par 4, 352 yards), 12 (par 4, 414 yards) and 18 (par 4, 342 yards). He hit a 60-degree wedge 90 yards to 10 feet on No. 5; a 9-iron 145 yards to three feet on No. 12 and a 56-degree wedge 100 yards to 20 feet on No. 18. A missed green on No. 3 (par 4, 394 yards), courtesy of a 9-iron, and a three-putt from 30 feet on No. 7 (par 5, 510 yards) resulted in two outward bogeys. Riverton’s par 3s gave Goodrich fits heading in. He dumped a 9-iron into the back bunker on the 145-yard 11th and a 6-iron into the right greenside bunker on the 188-yard 14th, failing to get up-and-down for pars on each.
An injury during last year’s stroke play qualifying round in the Junior Boys’ Championship sealed Goodrich’s match play fate. He fell to eventual champion Roland Massimino in the first round, citing an ailing spine.
“I felt like last year was a difficult year,” Goodrich said. “After stroke play qualifying, I actually hurt my back really bad. I wasn’t really ready for the match with Michael.”
Healthy and rejuvenated, Goodrich feels ready for his bout with Jack Henderson of Gulph Mills Golf Club, who upended Talamore Country Club’s Quinn Guzman in a sudden-death playoff for the final match play spot. Henderson, 17, of Wayne, Pa., advanced with a two-putt birdie on No. 17 (par 5, 470 yards), the second playoff hole.
In Medico’s case, the 17th hole brewed outright medalist honors after the recent Holy Redeemer High School graduate painted the flagstick with a 6-iron from 195 yards. Medico left his 15-footer for eagle six inches in the heart. He carded a birdie on the previous hole (par 3, 150 yards), where he bumped an 8-iron to eight feet. Medico, who will attend Monmouth University in the fall, took a conservative approach on No. 18 and watched his 4-iron crept into the rough. He negotiated a flyer lie with a pitching wedge from 120 yards, but missed the green and registered a bogey. Misclubs on Nos. 6 (par 3, 205 yards) and 11 marked Medico’s other Monday miscues.
Donald Ross designs gel with Medico’s game, and Riverton seemed to disperse plenty of good vibes.
“It reminds me a lot of Torresdale-Frankford [Country Club, site of the 2012 Junior Boys’ Championship] two years ago,” Medico, a semifinalist in 2013, said. “It’s short with tricky greens so I really like that. It’s going to be a good test of golf tomorrow. Hopefully I play as well as I did today.”
Applecross Country Club, represented by Joshua Madarang, Nicholas McCook, R.J. Wren and Paul Yun, won the Junior Team Championship with a 218 total. The Junior Team Championship runs concurrently with the 18-hole qualifier on the event’s first day. Teams consist of three or four players with the low three scores counting toward the final total.
