Irey, Pokorny headline Patterson Cup Qualifier at Indian Valley

TELFORD, Pa. — A Golf Association of Philadelphia babyface and an elder statesman shared medalist honors in a Joseph H. Patterson Cup Qualifier at Indian Valley Country Club (par 72, 6,847 yards) Tuesday. James Pokorny of the Golf Course at Glen Mills, who only started playing in Association events a year ago, and Lookaway Golf Club’s Roc Irey, a longtime standout on the Senior circuit, carded respective 1-under-par 71s to lead a field of 107 players hoping to earn one of 30 qualifying spots and ties available for the Championship proper.

The cut line dropped to 77 by day’s end. The Joseph H. Patterson Cup will take place Aug. 6-7 at Tavistock Country Club.

â€śMy accuracy was pretty good. I was pin-high most of the day,” Pokorny, 25, of Havertown, Pa., said. “I didn’t hurt myself off the tee. I just had my first golf lesson about three weeks ago, but from caddying, I’ve had a good understanding on how to play. I was really happy today with my swing. I stuck to the whole process and played pretty well. I’m pretty happy with the round.”

â€śComing off of yesterday’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier [at Huntingdon Valley Country Club] and walking in that heat, to have a cart and two of my buddies [Ed Chylinski and Thomas Hyland] made the world of difference,” Irey, 62, of Furlong, Pa., said. “Other than that, I played very smart. It was hard to adjust the speed of the greens from yesterday to today, which was probably to my advantage, since you can smash them.”

Both Irey and Pokorny capitalized on the par 5s at Indian Valley. On No. 3 (516 yards), Pokorny, a caddie at Merion Golf Club, knocked a gap wedge 118 yards to 10 feet and watched his birdie putt drop on the left edge. After nearly reaching the No. 8 (510 yards) green in two strokes, Irey eased a chip to three feet for a 4. Both players birdied No. 12 (517 yards); Pokorny spun a sand wedge from 96 yards to five feet, and Irey skinned a 51-degree wedge 107 yards to 10 feet. On No. 15 (552 yards), Pokorny smacked a sand wedge 86 yards to 15 feet above the hole location and drained the putt.

The par 4, 391-yard 18th hole christened Pokorny and Irey as co-medalists. The former caught the front right bunker with an 8-iron, splashed out to 20 feet and missed the ensuing par putt. Irey, playing in the group behind, knifed a 51-degree wedge 117 yards to six and executed the birdie try. The conversion made up for a horseshoed seven-footer for par on the previous hole (par 4, 394 yards).

â€śOther than about three tee shots, I drove it exceptionally well,” Irey said. “I played smart for this golf course. Where the pins were, you could never hit over the green, and if you hit around the green, they were very firm so it would springboard away. You had to hit the green somewhere and take your chances.”

Pokorny is glad he gave GAP a chance. Now his game will stack against the region’s best come Tavistock.

â€śI’m hoping to keep playing well and improving,” Pokorny said. “If I could make the cut first and get into contention, I’d be really happy with that. I’m looking forward to it.”

The final Patterson Cup Qualifier will take place Thursday, July 24 at Hartefeld National.

NOTES — Torresdale-Frankford Country Club’s Luke Liddell aced the par 3, 157-yard 16th hole with a 9-iron. It was the Philadelphia, Pa. resident’s first career hole-in-one. Liddell, 21, is an incoming senior at Rider University … The second oldest Championship in the Golf Association of Philadelphia, the Joseph H. Patterson Cup memorializes a man who fostered the game in its infancy. Joseph Henry Patterson, a Philadelphia Cricket Club member, competed in the first out-of-town match played by a team of Philadelphians. Friends of Patterson donated the Cup, designed by J.E. Caldwell & Co., to the GAP in 1900.
