GAP well-represented in U.S. Mid-Amateur at Saucon Valley

Thirteen players with Golf Association of Philadelphia ties will compete in the 34th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which begins tomorrow at Saucon Valley Country Club. Stroke play qualifying starts on the facility’s Old Course (par 71, 7,091 yards) Sept. 6 and concludes on the Weyhill Course (par 71, 7,054 yards) Sept. 7.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur consists of 36 holes of stroke play, after which the 264-player field will be reduced to the low 64 scorers. There will be six rounds of match play at Saucon Valley Country Club’s Old Course, starting Sept. 8. The quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Sept. 10. The championship is scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Thursday, Sept. 11, starting at 7 a.m.

This marks Saucon Valley’s first time hosting the event. The beautiful Bethlehem, Pa. venue welcomed the GAP Amateur Championship in 2010, and most recently, the Mason-Dixon Matches a year ago.

Among the 13 locals in the U.S. Mid-Amateur field is a pair of reigning GAP champions: Peter Barron, III of Stone Harbor Golf Club (Middle-Amateur) and Jeff Osberg of Huntingdon Valley Country Club (Amateur). Three Philadelphia Cricket Club members will tee it up as well — John Brennan, Andy Latowski and Robert Savarese, Jr. The host club’s own Matthew Mattare, the event’s medalist a year ago and a quarterfinalist in 2012, is also in the field. Not pictured below is Mark Zbrzeznj, a Whitemarsh Valley Country Club member who qualified at Highland Meadows Golf Course in Windsor, Colo.
