William Brady rolls a birdie attempt on No. 18 (par 4, 337 yards).

Brady collects Chapman (Net) title at Riverton

CINNAMINSON, N.J. - It was a picture-perfect day for The Springhaven Club’s William Brady on Thursday.

Brady, playing on a highly-praised Riverton Country Club track (par 71, 5,814 yards) under nothing but blue skies, collected 43 Stableford points en route to the Frank H. Chapman Memorial Cup (Net) title. The win was Brady’s first victory in a GAP event.

â€śIt was a great day all around. This was the first time I’ve played this course,” said Brady, 63, of West Chester, Pa. “I’ve been playing a lot more consistently lately, more than I have ever been. There was not one hole today where I couldn’t reach the green in regulation. I don’t hit the ball real far off the tee, so this course was perfect for my game.”

Nine net birdies propelled Brady to the top of the 71-player leaderboard. The Springhaven member of 30 years cleared the rest of the field by two Stableford points.

Brady ran into his only trouble of the round on No. 7 (par 5, 458 yards) when his drive found a grassy fairway bunker on the right side. His next shot found the left side of the hole near the green, but then a skulled chip shot set Brady back again. He carded a double bogey after an uncharacteristic three putt.

â€śOther than that, it was smooth,” said Brady, who donned a Ben Hogan-styled cap at Riverton. “I putted really, really well. The greens here were sweet.”

The only thing that could have made the day any more ideal would have been a Brady birdie. He just missed on all five of his birdies opportunities on the day. Brady ultimately ended with a solid gross score of 80, including ten gross pars.

After the winning round, Brady pointed out his four hybrid clubs, three Clevelands and one Ping, as a key to his success. Brady replaced the 3, 4, 5, and 6-irons in his bag with them, which he says “help him play with everyone else”.

Another key to Brady’s recent improving play? Making the ultimate switch to senior shafts.

â€śI was given a set of clubs for retirement,” said Brady. “When I got fitted for them, they asked me about senior shafts, and I said let’s give it a go. Ever since then its really paid off. No pain, no aches, nothing. It’s been fun to play.”

Frank H. Chapman, a Whitemarsh Valley Country Club member, served as the Association’s secretary-treasurer for 23 years. He died on June 7, 1955 at the age of 88. The Net tournament is held in his honor.
