BMW GAP Team Matches schedule announced

Spring is in the air and so are the BMW GAP Team Matches.

New in 2015, BMW, the official automotive partner of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, will sponsor the event’s 114th edition. The BMW GAP Team Matches will take place April 19, 26 and May 3. The Playoff & Challenges is set for Saturday, May 9.

Defending champion Overbrook Golf Club sits in Section III alongside fellow former winners Merion Golf Club (1897, 1923, 1995, 2003), Yardley Country Club (1989, 1997-98, 2000, 2002) and Huntingdon Valley Country Club, which holds a record 32 titles. Overbrook erased a 26-year space between trophies with a victory over favorite Philadelphia Cricket Club by a five-point margin a year ago.

A total of 332 teams from 138 Member Clubs will participate in the BMW GAP Team Matches. New to the fray this year are Blue Shamrock Golf Club, Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort and White Clay Creek Country Club. Four clubs — Huntingdon Valley, Overbrook Philadelphia Cricket and Tavistock Country Club — will field five teams.

The BMW GAP Team Matches, which began in 1897, is the oldest interclub competition in the nation. Participating clubs field teams of 12, with each member competing in a singles and a four-ball match simultaneously.

The Top 16 teams occupy four sections in Division AA. A Playoff among the winners of each section determines the BMW GAP Team Matches champion. Challenges in other Divisions (A to AA and B to A) enable teams to move up.

Originally known as the Interclub Team Matches, the competition became the Suburban League Matches in 1915 and the GAP Team Matches in 1997. It wasn’t contested from 1943-45 because of World War II and in 1994 due to severe icing, which created unplayable conditions at golf courses throughout the region.
