Philadelphia golf historian Finegan dies at age 85

  James Finegan, Sr., widely regarded as Philadelphia’s golf historian, died today at age 85.

  Services will take place Wednesday, March 18 at St. John Vianney Church in Gladwyne, Pa. Family will receive condolences from 9 to 11 a.m. with mass to follow.

  Finegan is the author of “A Centennial Tribute to GOLF in Philadelphia,” which chronicles the region’s rich history in the game. He also penned the official histories of Pine Valley Golf Club and Aronimink Golf Club. Finegan, a longtime Philadelphia Country Club member, received the United States Golf Association’s Herbert Warren Wind Book Award in 2006 for his coffee table volume on the courses of Scotland and Ireland. He is considered the foremost American authority on the golf courses of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

  Finegan, of Villanova, Pa., received the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Distinguished Service Award in 2010.
