Rowe finds summer success, medals in
Patterson Cup Qual. at Whitford

EXTON, Pa. – The summertime living was finally easy for Robby Rowe’s golf game on Monday at Whitford Country Club (par 72, 6,568 yards).

After struggling the past few summers in Qualifiers around the Philadelphia region, Bent Creek Country Club’s Rowe broke through in a big way, firing a 3-under 69 to earn medalist honors in the final of two Patterson Cup Qualifiers.

â€œI’ve hit the struggle bus during the summers. The past three years, I’ve missed cuts and it’s been so frustrating for me,” said the 21 year old. “I’ve been decent during the school year, but when I’ve played in the summer, I don’t know if I over think things and play a little tight, but today I just wanted to go out and play free, stay patient and let whatever happens, happen.“

And let it happen he did.

Starting his day on the back nine, Rowe found himself in trouble out of the gate on No. 10 (par 4, 367 yards) when his tee shot came to rest under a tree. His punch out found a greenside bunker, followed by a sub-par sand shot to 20 feet from the flagstick. But Rowe refused to begin his round with a bogey. He sunk the par attempt from distance and never looked back.

A birdie at No. 11 (par 4, 341 yards) really got Rowe’s momentum going in the right direction. After a well-struck 2-iron off the tee, Rowe stuck a pitching wedge on the middle of the green, and once again found the bottom of the cup from 20 feet.

After Rowe rifled a drive down the middle of the 16th (par 5, 530 yards) fairway, he found a greenside bunker with his 2-iron from 245 yards out, which catered well to Rowe’s stellar sand play. He blasted out to six feet and sunk the birdie to move to 2 under. Rowe followed that up with another birdie on No. 17 (par 3, 175 yards) by placing a 7-iron to two feet. He ended the back nine with a 3-under 33, and played consistent-par golf on the front to keep his name safely atop the leaderboard for the rest of the day.

The last time Rowe played Whitford’s track, he struggled with a round of 88 during a U.S. Open Local Qualifier in 2013. This time around, things were a little different.

â€œI was going through a swing change, and just had the shanks at the time,” recalled Rowe, a resident of Lititz, Pa. “Coming back today, I was excited knowing I was playing pretty well. I was thinking, ‘Let’s see what I can do with this golf course’. It feels really great to finally see results after putting in the hard work.”

Rowe, a rising senior on the Millersville University golf team, also received a surprise glimpse at a future teammate during his medal-winning round. He was paired up with Matt Keim, who will be a freshman at Millersville this upcoming school year. Millersville’s head coach, Scott Vandegrift, was also on hand to watch his current and future players in action.

â€œI asked Matt if he was playing in college anywhere next year. He said, ‘Yeah, I’m playing with you guys.’ I knew I had seen his name somewhere,” said Rowe, who led the Maruaders with a 74.9 scoring average during the 2014-15 season.

â€œWe talked about the college life, how to handle things, and about the good group of guys we have. It’s going to be a good time. We’re definitely going to have fun together.”

Brookside Country Club's Keim also qualified after posting a 4-over-round of 76.

Rowe topped a field of 113 players vying for 32 available spots. The cut line dropped to 76 by the end of the day. The 113th playing of the Patterson Cup will take place Aug. 6-7 at Chester Valley Golf Club.

The second oldest Championship in the Golf Association of Philadelphia, the Joseph H. Patterson Cup memorializes a man who fostered the game in its infancy. Joseph Henry Patterson, a Philadelphia Cricket Club member, competed in the first out-of-town match played by a team of Philadelphians. Friends of Patterson donated the Cup, designed by J.E. Caldwell & Co., to the GAP in 1900.
