Kevin Kramarski muscles a shot out of the rough on No. 15 (par 4, 385 yards).

Riverton's Kramarski fires 67, tops Patterson Qualifier at Burlington

MT. HOLLY, N.J. — Just like he did during his freshman season at Iona College, Kevin Kramarski of Riverton Country Club caught fire on Thursday at Burlington Country Club (par 70, 6,602 yards). The young Gael posted a 3-under 67 to take medalist honors in the first of two Patterson Cup Qualifiers.

Kramarski, Iona’s rising-sophomore stud, topped a field of 111 qualifying hopefuls looking to attain one of 30 available spots and ties for the 113th Joseph H. Patterson Cup.

The cut line dropped to 76 by day’s end. The Patterson Cup will take place Aug. 6-7 at Chester Valley Golf Club.

The first birdie on the leading scorecard fell on No. 6, after Kramarski muscled one out of the right rough from 148 yards to 15 feet and drained the putt. He concluded his front-nine score of 34 with an eight foot birdie putt on No. 9 (par 4, 435 yards) that found nothing but the bottom of the cup.

Kramarski’s momentum kept rolling on the back. A red number came on No. 10 (par 3, 135 yards) thanks to Kramarski sticking a pitching wedge to within four feet, and then again on No. 11 (par 4, 348 yards) thanks to another converted birdie from seven feet.

The MAAC Rookie of the Year took home the individual title at this year’s conference championship after posting a three-round score of 216 (74-73-69).

â€śLast year in the spring, I kind of caught fire in a bottle,” said Kramarski, of Palmyra, N.J. “I won the Monmouth Invitational, took home the [Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title] and made it to Regionals. That was really cool.”

As for his GAP successes, Kramarski raised the trophy at the 2012 Jock Mackenzie Memorial, and was a member of the Association’s Williamson Cup team in both 2012 and 2013. He also finished as the runner up in the 2013 Junior Boys’ Championship at The Ridge at Back Brook.

Kramarski qualified for the Patterson Cup last year at Tavistock Country Club but floundered in Round Two. He failed to qualify for both the GAP Open and BMW Philadelphia Amateur in 2015, but things are looking more optimistic for Kramarski heading into the Patterson with a medalist honor to his name.

â€śI haven’t really shown up well in the Majors I’ve played in,” said the 19 year old. “Hopefully I’ll turn that around this time. We’ll see what I can do when I get there.”

A finish atop a qualifying leaderboard might just be the recipe Kramarski’s golf doctor has ordered for finding GAP Major success. He has never played Chester Valley’s track before, but a practice round or two will be squeezed into his schedule before the Championship tees off.

â€śI’m going through a nice stretch right now and I just need to keep it going,” he said. “If I play like the way I did today, I’ll be in the hunt."

The second oldest Championship in the Golf Association of Philadelphia, the Joseph H. Patterson Cup memorializes a man who fostered the game in its infancy. Joseph Henry Patterson, a Philadelphia Cricket Club member, competed in the first out-of-town match played by a team of Philadelphians. Friends of Patterson donated the Cup, designed by J.E. Caldwell & Co., to the GAP in 1900.
