PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Bert Kosup continues to emerge as a regular contender on the 55-and-over circuit. A recent two-time Golf Association of Philadelphia victor, Kosup carded a 2-under-par 68 to sit atop the 45th Senior Amateur Championship on Tuesday at a steamy Union League Golf Club at Torresdale (par 70, 6,214 yards) after the opening round.
The final grouping of Kosup of The Ridge at Back Brook; Glenn Smeraglio of Mercer Oaks Golf Course (1 under) and Steven Walczak of Wilmington Country Club (even par) begins play of the second and final round on Wednesday at 2:20 p.m.
Kosup, 60, of Flemington, N.J., won the 2015 Brewer Cup Senior Division in late July. Last year, Kosup earned his first Association victory with a playoff win in the Frank H. Chapman Memorial Cup (Gross).
He heads into the second and final round of the Senior Amateur Championship with positive vibes.
“I feel confident in my game and I feel confident in my short game which is really a big help around green complexes like this,” said Kosup. “I’m just going to try and keep a clear head and hit good shots.”
Kosup made four birdies and two bogeys en route to the day’s lowest score.
Starting on the back nine, Kosup opened with a birdie on the par 5, No. 10 (494 yards) after knocking a short chip shot to five feet. He added another birdie on No. 16 (par 5, 548 yards) with a gap wedge from 70 yards that stopped eight feet below the hole. He drained the putt.
Kosup bogeyed No. 1 (par 4, 335 yards) after a three-putt but responded immediately with a birdie on No. 2 (par 4, 390 yards) after launching a 7-iron from 157 yards to seven feet from the hole. Kosup holed a short pitch for bogey on No. 8 (par 4, 453 yards) from the grass just in front of the right greenside bunker before closing with authority. On No. 9 (par 3, 141 yards), he hit a 7-iron to eight feet above the hole and converted the slippery try.
“I was trying to make pars,” said Kosup of his mentality entering the day. “I’ve never played the golf course before. I asked around and everyone said it’s a tight golf course, keep it in the fairway and hit it where you can hit the next shot on the green. [They said] get it on the green and you will be ok. That’s what I did most of the day.”
Smeraglio, 55, of Newtown, Pa., carded the only other below-par score at 1 under. He is the current Senior Player of the Year leader. Smeraglio also holds a four-shot lead over Raymond Thompson of Overbrook Golf Club in the Senior Silver Cross Award chase.
Defending Senior Amateur champion Chip Lutz of LedgeRock Golf Club, the five-time reigning Senior Player of the Year, carded a 1-over-par 71.
This is familiar territory for Donatoni. He won the 2013 Senior Amateur Super-Senior Division title and placed second a year ago. He is the two-time reigning Super-Senior Player of the Year.
Donatoni, 67, of Malvern, Pa., is looking for a clean sweep of the Super-Senior Division once again. He won the Warner Cup (Gross); Chapman Cup (Gross) and Brewer Cup. Furthermore, Donatoni holds a 14-shot lead in the Super-Senior Silver Cross, an award he’s earned in consecutive years (2013-14).
“The course is tight. You have to keep the ball in play,” he said. “I was fortunate. I got a couple of good bounces today but I got a couple of bad breaks also. They all even out.”
Donatoni readily cited the par 4, 316-yard No. 1 as an example within his ebb and flow of luck. He played a conservative hybrid off the tee, but his golf ball didn’t respond to the safety gloves. It instead darted into the water hazard. Donatoni then lifted a wedge onto the front of the green and converted an uphill, left-to-right breaking 40-footer to save par.
Lodovici also classified Tuesday as a case of “good breaks and bad breaks.” The Super-Senior Division rookie is searching for his first Golf Association of Philadelphia championship, although he has a Winter Series Player of the Year title to his credit.
“I’ve been playing well all year. I’m very comfortable on this golf course,” Lodovici, 65, of Atco, N.J., said. “Years ago, they used to have a better-ball tournament here that I played in. I kind of know the layout of the course, and I’m very comfortable on the greens. If I do as well tomorrow as I did today, I’ll be satisfied.”
Donatoni and Lodovici will be joined by Robert Billings of Rolling Green Golf Club in the final Super-Senior group, which tees off at 9:20 a.m. tomorrow.
