Alan Van Horn's birdie attempt finds the bottom of the cup on No. 12 (par 4, 287 yards). |
Former champs call in sensational subs to win Senior Four-Man Team
LANCASTER, Pa. - In 2012, David Brookreson of Huntingdon Valley Country Club and Alan Van Horn of Commonwealth National Golf Club teamed up with John Hubbert, III of Galloway National Golf Club and Commonwealth’s Arthur Jacoby to take home the Senior Four-Man Team title. The fearsome foursome hoped to reclaim their title on Thursday at Meadia Heights Golf Club (par 71, 6,024 yards), but plans changed when Hubbert and Jacoby were suddenly deemed unavailable.

Commonwealth's Matthew Bellis and Green Valley Country Club's Robert Dubin were the next men up.
“Jacoby told us the last time he played with Dubin, he made a few birdies for them and that he’ll be good for us,” said Brookreson, 66, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. “And what did he do? He birdied the first hole. He didn’t let us down.”
The champions fired a Four-Man score of 8-under 134 to win the 26th playing of the tournament, which included 29 teams.
On the day, the sensational substitutes did anything but disappoint. Dubin faced a 35-foot birdie attempt on No. 1 (par 4, 368 yards) while implementing Jacoby’s putter, which was loaned to him prior to the round. He went on to find the bottom of the cup with his first stroke wielding the foreign flatstick.
Momentum continued on No. 3 (par 4, 350 yards) thanks to the group’s other newcomer. Bellis found the fairway with an ideal tee shot, flipped a sand wedge to 20 feet and made the putt from distance to bring the team to 2 under. After two pars on No. 4 (par 3, 180 yards), the group made its big move of the day on No. 5 (par 4, 313 yards). Bellis stepped up big for the team once again, sinking a right-to-left birdie attempt from 15 feet. Van Horn then topped him with a 12-foot birdie of his own.
While only one red number was carded on the back nine, no bogeys were posted either. The team’s gross score of 134 translated into a net score of 125, which also came in as the low net score of the tournament.
Van Horn and Dubin both finished with individual gross scores of 2-over 73, while Brookreson came in at 74 and Bellis followed with a 75.
“One thing I will say about the last nine is we made some great pars,” said Bellis, 66, of Plymouth Meeting, Pa. “There were a couple of holes, on the front nine, that all of us were involved in every hole. But on the back nine, we sometimes only have 2 people in the hole to score.”
“On the back side, we kept on waiting for Brooky to make birdie,” joked Van Horn, 65, of Ambler, Pa. “We made a conscious decision to make no more birdies until Brooky makes one because he’s feeling left out.”
Amidst the champion’s struggle to find birdie putts on the back nine, the one essential aspect of the team keeping their 8-under score in tact ended up being Brookreson’s playing pedigree, which includes six GAP Major titles and two Silver Cross Awards.
“To me, the thing that kept us all together is we never really thought that we were going to lose a stroke on any hole,” said Brookreson, who referred to himself as the “wily, old veteran” of the team. “We laughed, smiled and had fun. It was a great time.”
