Senior POY implications abound at Hidden Creek

This week’s U.S. Senior Amateur at Hidden Creek Golf Club may determine the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s 2015 Senior Player of the Year.

Four players within an earshot of current leader David West will compete in the national championship, which will take place Sept.26-Oct. 1 at the Egg Harbor Township, N.J. venue. West, a Whitford Country Club member, heads the Senior POY standings with 480 points, but failed to qualify for the U.S. Senior Amateur. His closest pursuers — Chip Lutz of LedgeRock Golf Club (7.5 points back), Glenn Smeraglio of Mercer Oaks Golf Course (28.75), Roc Irey of Lookaway Golf Club (53.1) and Raymond Thompson of Overbrook Golf Club (115) — did, however, earn a spot at Hidden Creek.

If any of the aforementioned advance into match play, they will receive 75 POY points. That amount increases with each step forward in the bracket.

Lutz, Smeraglio, Irey and Thomspon aren’t the only players with GAP ties who will compete at Hidden Creek. The four will be joined by White Manor Country Club’s Don Donatoni, Whitford’s Mark Ellinger, Little Mill Country Club’s Thomas Hyland, Merion Golf Club’s Buddy Marucci, Lancaster Country Club’s Kenneth Phillips and Five Ponds Golf Club’s Brian Rothaus.

Marucci won the U.S. Senior Amateur in 2008. Lutz is a former medalist (2013) and two-time semifinalist (2010, 2013). Thompson has appeared in four of the last five U.S. Senior Amateurs, qualifying for match play in all.
