2017 Executive Committee approved; Morey re-elected President

  Robert M. Morey of Merion Golf Club was elected to serve a third and final one-year term as President of the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) for its fiscal year beginning Dec. 1, 2016. Morey, 69, served as the Association’s President for 2014-15. Under the Association’s By-Laws, Morey is eligible to serve three successive years.

  The election of Officers and the 17-member Executive Committee occurred on Oct. 27 during the Association's 120th Annual Meeting at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.

  Also elected to one-year terms as Officers are T. Quinn Spitzer, Huntingdon Valley Country Club, Vice President; Richard Ogorek, Fieldstone Golf Club, Treasurer and Oscar L. Mestre, Overbrook Golf Club, Secretary. Jeffrey S. Henderson of Gulph Mills Golf Club, is nominated for a one-year term in his current role as General Counsel. All Officers served in their respective roles in 2016.

  Others on the GAP Executive Committee who were elected to serve an additional one-year term each are Ed Brzezowski, Concord Country Club; John R. Choyka, Indian Valley Country Club; C. Greg Guyer, Philadelphia Cricket Club; Edward Hutchinson, Tavistock Country Club; Michael B. McLelland, Chester Valley Golf Club; Glenn Meyer, Philmont Country Club; Noreen Mohler, Northampton Country Club; Jules J. Quinones, Blue Bell Country Club; Joseph Virdone, Philadelphia Country Club; Michael J. Walsh, III, Aronimink Golf Club and Jonathan P. Warner, Aronimink Golf Club. Warner is an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee as a result of his role as Chairman of the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust.

  Also, two new representatives were elected to their first one-year terms on the Executive Committee. They are:

  • Kenneth Phillips of Lancaster Country Club. Phillips, 57, of Lancaster, Pa., is a Managing Director for RBC Capital Markets, Lancaster, Pa., specializing in municipal finance. Phillips has worked with Pennsylvania schools and municipalities for 35 years. He has served on LCC’s board of governors for five years including two as president. Phillips also currently serves on both the golf and greens committee. He stated that one of his all-time golf accomplishments was serving as Co-Chair of the Marshal Division for the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster, serving with his good friend King Knox. Phillips has served on the Pennsylvania Golf Association since 2011 serving in the role of Finance Chairman and currently 1st Vice President. He serves on the alocal Lancaster County Golf Association board.

  • Barry J. Westington of the Country Club of Scranton. Westington, 59, of South Abington Township, Pa., is also a member of The Scranton Canoe Club. Westington is Vice President of Commercial Credit for Community Bank, a regional bank headquartered in DeWitt, N.Y. He specializes in commercial loan remediation in the Special Assets Division of the Bank. Westington has been a member at the CC of Scranton for 13 years and has served on its golf committee. A lifetime member of the Scranton Canoe Club, Westington has previously served on the board of directors there for seven years and currently serves on the club’s golf committee. He has been a member of the Anthracite Golf Association (AGA) Executive Committee since 2004. He serves on the AGA’s Finance, Golf and Advertising committees. The AGA has been promoting golf throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania since 1952. Westington graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1982 with a degree in business management.
  Retiring from the GAP Executive Committee as of its Nov. 30, 2015 fiscal year-end are Larry Borowsky, M.D., White Manor Country Club, and Williams Higgins, St. Davids Golf Club. Borowsky is retiring after six years on the Executive Committee and Higgins after five years.

  The 2016 Nominating Committee was chaired by Daniel B. Burton of Lancaster Country Club with Frank E. Rutan, IV of Philadelphia Cricket Club and Terrence J. Sawyer of Lu Lu Country Club serving as members. Burton and Rutan are former Golf Association of Philadelphia Presidents. Sawyer is a former Executive Committee member.
