GAP squad heads South
for Mason-Dixon Matches

  The Golf Association of Philadelphia looks to defend its title against the Middle Atlantic Golf Association when the two organizations face off yet again in their longstanding rivalry this Saturday and Sunday in the 55th running of the Mason-Dixon Matches. The annual dual is set to take place at Robert Trent Jones GC in Lake Manassas, Va.

  The matches have been played annually since 1952 with the Golf Association of Philadelphia holding a 31-19 lead. There have been four ties.

  In 2005, the Golf Association of Philadelphia hosted the event at Metedeconk National GC in Jackson, N.J., and regained the title with a 9½ to 8½ point victory over the Middle Atlantic Golf Association squad.

  The matches pit two 12-man teams, including one junior and two seniors, from each association in a four-ball match (held on Saturday) and an individual match (held on Sunday). Each match is worth one point. A possible 18 points are available. In the case of a tie (9-9), the defending association retains the trophy.

  Representing the Golf Association of Philadelphia in 2006 are Mike Danner of Lu Lu CC, Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC, Michael Dougherty of Huntingdon Valley CC (senior representative), Robert Galbreath, Jr. of Huntingdon Valley CC (junior representative), Chris Gallagher of Penn Oaks GC, Chris Lange of Overbrook GC, Bill Lawler of Fox Hill CC (senior representative), Steve Owens of Commonwealth National GC, Paul Rogowicz of Yardley CC, Brian Rothaus of Philmont CC and Doug Zelner of Coatesville CC. Glenn Smeraglio of Yardley CC is the captain.

  Next year, the Mason-Dixon Matches return to the Delaware Valley as the Golf Association of Philadelphia will play host to the 56th edition of the contest.
